Tropic Star Lodge and Sport Fishing Resort in Pinas Bay Panama - Black Marlin Capital of the World

This Marlin had a little Bonito for breakfastThe bite continues to be good on the 100 fathom curve. The weather did not corporate with us as well; we saw a few of overcast days and heavy afternoon showers but, as you know, we cannot control the weather. Crews were having some trouble catching bonitos but there were plenty of Skipjack Tunas on the ledge. These big baits are a favorite out here and the bites, if you are lucky enough to see one, are spectacular. Both the Black Marlin and Blue Marlin love them.

96 Marlin caught and released...
The Blue Marlin numbered 81 combined with 15 Black Marlin...
When our guests made their initial reservations, little did they know they would become part of TSL History.  Certainly a week to remember, teaming up to set a New TSL Record by releasing 96 Marlin, out of 167 hook-ups in 6-days of fishing.  The moon was full, and they were biting lures and live Bonito.  Numerous Yellowfin Tuna in the 80 to 100 pound range, along with 47 Sailfish were caught as well...
Congrats to all that participated in a true Tropic Star Experience...

Marlin! Marlin! Marlin! After a week of absolute mayhem, every fisherman knows to watch out! It will be tuff to beat that 96 Marlin week, but nothing is impossible. The last couple of weeks has been a little slower, however the billfish are here and we are willing to eat. There are quite a few Black Marlin around this time, a lot more than last August; and they are really big. Many are upwards of 500 lbs.  Yellowfin Tuna schools continue to patrol the ledge offshore and we’re also having a lot of fun with them. They are not giants (80-100 lb) but still put up a really tough scrap. There’s also been some great inshore fishing as well. The Roosterfish are around in good numbers.

Blue Marlin breaching the surfaceThe only word that comes to mind is “Caliente!” which means HOT! That’s what’s going on down here at TSL. The Marlin bite has exploded and there is also no end to the Yellowfin Tunas. One angler released 4 Blues in just one day and it doesn’t end there; numerous double header Marlin have also been recorded. There’s definitely more Blues than Blacks but that’s to be expected this time of year. Yes, It’s the bite I’ve been telling you about (July-September), and with a full lodge till the end of the season, the numbers are going to be incredible.
