Tropic Star Lodge and Sport Fishing Resort in Pinas Bay Panama - Black Marlin Capital of the World

Nikki Wilson's Marlin being faught by a TSL crew memberAnother great week of fishing at TSL. Although bait was a little hard to come by on the reef, the crews picked up the Marlin candies offshore. There was plenty of Skipjacks and small Yellowfin Tunas and everyone who fishes this area knows that any of these baits behind the boat is a sure shot at a big marlin. Quite a few 500-600 lb fish were released and the sailfish bite continues to be excellent. We are also catching the Big Yellowfin Tunas and some Huge Dorado as well. Lots of action on the edge. Inshore is beginning to pick up as well and a few anglers had great luck with Cubera Snapper. The dry season is in full swing now and the drags are burning.

Tropic Star Lodge clients first Black_MarlinThe week was an all out bite; the billfish were everywhere, on the reef and offshore.  A giant school of Blues were located just west of the reef and all 13 boats got in on the action. I recall that afternoon seeing 5 boats backing down on fish is a mess of birds and feeding bonitos. Incredible! The next few days were similar…..lots of marlin and sails were feeding and most boats returned with 2-3 marlin releases. One boat released 3 Blue Marlin out of 8 hookups. One angler , Brian Luecke, caught an absolute MONSTER of a Yellowfin Tuna on the reef that tipped the scales at 310 lbs; biggest we've seen here in years! Sixty eight Marlin and 87 Sails were released for the week.

Marlin on the line at the Tropic Star Lodge in PanamaAs we roll through the month of January the  fishing has been pretty good. Both marlin and Sailfish are biting and there seem to be more concentrated offshore, on the 100 fathom line. There's way more Blue Marlin and Blacks this season and the fish are really big, many in the 500 lb range are being released. We are also happy to see the big numbers of Sailfish this season, There is also no shortage of HUGE Dorado offshore. Some fish were taken in the 60-70 lb range.
