Swordfish and Marlin bite is starting to heat up at the Tropic Star LodgeThe bite really turned on this last week, mostly mixed bag but the highlight was the fact that Yellowfin Tunas were piled up offshore and our guests had loads of fun catching them. The big ones are here too, up to 180 lbs. There were a few Black Marlin around, but when the tuna bite is on, most folks prefer the nonstop action. These fish are voracious feeders and will basically nail the bait as soon as it lands in the water. Both live bonito and poppers worked well.

Two beautiful yellowfin tunas caught by guests at the Tropic Star LodgeAfter closing for the last two weeks of May we are now ready to begin the second half or our 2012 Season. As always the Marlin bite is firing up and should continue to improve in July until October. The big Black Marlin and Blue Marlin are on the outer ledges around 20 miles from the lodge and there’s plenty of bonitos and small Yellowfin Tuna for them to eat. The reef is loaded with bait and it won’t be long till the marlin bite turns on the reef. Until then, we’ll need to make some long runs offshore but that’s okay as the seas are calm this time of year.
