Sailfish, Yellowfin Tuna, Roosterfish, Cubera Snapper

The Sailfishing has picked up somewhat and the crews are working very to put our TSL anglers on the fish. They seem to be schooling deeper this season so at times locating them was a challenge but once we found the fish it was easy. At times the Sailfish were just 3-4 miles from the lodge right up against the shoreline. Some folks actually hooked them just a few yards from the beach. Some folks actually hooked them just a few yards from the beach. There were days it would be fast and furious with as much as 6 hungry Sailfish coming up on the teasers at one time.

Ian_Pairaudeau-Sailfish-220The fishing over the last two weeks has been mostly inshore. The bite is on and guests are having great action with Roosterfish, Giant Cubera Snappers and a host of other inshore species like Spotted Trevally, Almaco Jack and Robalo. Those who have ventured offshore have been rewarded with some good but sporadic Yellowfin Tuna action and some lucky anglers have had some good luck with a few Marlin and Sailfish.

Triumphant Tropic Star Client with a hefty RoosterfishThe inshore bite continues to be good and our guests have been hauling in some really big Roosterfish and the odd Cubera Snapper. Some crews have been probing the 100 fathom curve in search of billfish but the bite  continues to be slow. There are tons of bait offshore and we remain hopeful that the sailfish will arrive soon.

Tropic Star Lodge client Steve Fancsy's Black Marlin March has historically been one of the better months to catch Black Marlin off the famed Pinas Reef, however the climate change this season has made it very difficult for us; the water temperatures are in the mid to high 70’s and although we are seeing many tailing fish they just don’t seem to want to bite the live bonitos. Some sailfish were caught while trolling plastics and the tunas have been showing up in the south along the coast. Inshore is also a bit challenging but our crews are working coast and have produces some huge Roosterfish and big Cuberas. There’s also lots of groupers and African Pompanos along the rocks.
