Blue Marlin, Sailfish, Yellowfin Tuna, Dorado, Roosterfish
The last two weeks we have been seeing some decent numbers of Sailfish out on the edge and although the Marlin bite has been slower than normal for this time of the year, our guests are picking up some rather good size Blue Marlin in the 400-500 lb range. The Black Marlin has been slow to arrive to our shores this season but we are expecting this to change anytime soon. Our annual run of Yellowfin Tuna has begun and there have been some spectacular tuna frenzies out on the edge. Inshore, the Roosterfish bite has been steady and just north of the lodge we’ve been hitting some monster Wahoo in the 60-80lb range.
Mark Davis, host of the well known TV Show BIG WATER ADVENTURES were back again this year for their 4th trip to Tropic Star and the focus this time was to target various species on top water lures. Our Marketing Director, Raleigh Werking also joined Mark this time and the results were astounding; try a double header of GIANT Yellowfin Tuna in the 160-180 lb range on poppers and another double header of 50-70 lb Wahoo on spinning tackle. The show was a tremendous success so look out for the Big Water Adventures next January 2014 on the Outdoor Channel…I promise you it’ll be a blast!
Both Pat Early and female angler Frances Alexander released their first Blue Marlin estimated at 450 lbs. Tony Dilworth and Shannon O’Neil also released their first Blue Marlin that was estimated at 400+ lbs. Ford Scott also had a shot at his first Blue Marlin in the 400lb range and got a release.
Both Michael and Christopher hooked into a double header Blue Marlin in the 400 lb range and with some really fancy boat handling skills, managed to release both of the 400 lb fish. They also released their first Pacific Sailfish in the 100 lb range. Cal Miller and Mike Reiner also had some good luck with the Blue Marlin and both released their first in the 350lb range.
Mitchell Wolfe released his first Blue Marlin in the 400 lb range and Brett Martin released his first Pacific Sailfish on the fly. His fish was estimated at 115 lbs. Tamara, Clayton and Taylor McNamara all released their first Sailfish estimated at 100-110 lbs. Michael O’Shea released a huge Sailfish, 140 lbs. Other notable catches were my James Billys who released his personal best Roosterfish that went around 70 lbs and Frances Alexander caught her largest Yellowfin Tuna ever that went almost 200 lb.
