April 26 - May 3
With the numbers of Sailfish increasing we were delighted to welcome the Ocean City Light Tackle Club to Tropic Star for their 61st Derby.
With everyone changing boats and having a rest day in between we had a tough but most enjoyable time keeping track of who was catching what. Amongst the veterans there were a few newbie’s who had not caught any Pacific Sailfish, they however rectified that very quickly with the hot bite going on during their stay. Jeff Readmond was one of them, and not only did he get his first Pacific Sailfish, he also won “ Rookie of the Year” by getting his 2nd, 3rd and 4th Sailfish on Monday 28th. He was joined in the firsts by David Readmond, Joseph Schwartz, Jenn Aldridge, PJ Aldridge, Ann McGuire and Donna Gray. Well done to all of them.
Some of the angler’s took advantage of some of the great inshore action on Sunday, Fred Aimes caught a 60lb Rooster fish while PJ Aldridge got a slightly larger one of 65lb’s. The rest of them went offshore chasing the Sails and caught 27 for the day.
Monday saw the bite hot up and by the end of the day a total of 72 had been landed by the contestants. Matt Barrazotto got off to a good start and pulled out a 300 point lead over a four way split for second place between PJ Aldridge, Wayne Six, Fred Aimes and Fred Flippen.
Tuesday was a rest day for the tournament and some people took advantage of this and relaxed at around the pool or went over to the white beach to regain some energy for more action to follow. Others went out and honed their skills on more Sailfish to give them the edge they needed.
Wednesday saw another red hot bite going on, some of the anglers getting 5 and 6 fish for the day. Wayne Six was the man to beat on Wednesday with his 6, closely followed by Katherine Dinapoli and Barry Fitzgerald with 5 each for tied second. This also let Wayne jump into a 200 point lead, with 1100 points, over our leader from yesterday Matt Barrazotto who was followed by Fred Aimes with 700 points in third.
Thursday was all down to the wire and there were some very concerted efforts made by a number of the angler’s to catch the leaders. Katherine made an excellent comeback with 7 fish which brought her total up to 1300 points. Wayne Six however was not going to let it slip and caught 4 Sailfish to hold onto his lead and win the Derby. Jeff Readmond and Matt Barrazotto tied for third with 1000 points.
Team Results:
1st Wayne Six and Fred Aimes
2nd Matt Barrazotto and Jeff Readmond
3rd Katherine DiNapoli and Paul Dyer
Boat Results:
1st Tropic Star
2nd Australia
3rd Canada
Congratulations to all those that participated and to those that supported their spouses.
