Hennie & Ursula Marais manage to keep you in fish stories. |
April 22 - 29
The fishing this week started slow and went nuts
towards the end. The Sailfish showed up in huge
numbers early in the week, however they free jumped
everywhere, but were not very interested in belly
baits or the ballyhoo. Frustrating to say the least.
The fleet took advantage of a red-hot bite on Friday.
Crews hit the Wahoo pretty hard a couple of days. One
boat returned with ten nice fish. All were taken on
cedar plugs, the natural ones. Hard to believe, but
everything is feeding on sardines right now.
The water is teaming with bait right now. The Bonita
are schooling and feeding on the sardines as well.
When you get to see the bait balls, things get
exciting. One angler described it as a fish mosh pit.
So, the marlin were given a rest, most anglers were
looking to cash in on the sailfish action. The numbers
show 2 Blue Marlin released. 74 sailfish and 38 tuna.
Most of the tuna were under 100lbs, but a private
boat named Decisions returned with a 272lb monster
Yellowfin. That fish was weighed Saturday night.
A handful of roosterfish made a showing, as did a few
amberjack. As always, a couple of toothy snapper
cooperated. The snapper tally was 13 Cuberas. 20 wahoo
got in trouble with their mouths. 1 grouper and a
couple dorado mixed things up in the kitchen.
Over all it was a good week here. A really great group
of anglers made the most of a slow bite. Friday was
the denouement. Several boats returned with close to
a dozen white flags flying. That means close to a
dozen sailfish released.
The people who caught their first sails were ecstatic.
Sabrina Herzing was one of the happiest people I have
ever met. She landed her first Pacific Sail, her first
snapper, her first jack and her first mackerel. The
snapper she caught was a unique one. This fish might
make the books as a small fry world record. We will
keep you posted on the outcome.
Sabrina's mother Gail caught her first Pacific Sail.
Dad, Lawrence Herzing caught his first Pacific Sail
and landed a 40bl Yellowfin. They were fishing
with Maso aboard Miss Spain.
Karla Branch and Ronald Matthews released their first
Pacific Sails.
Ronald caught his first wahoo as well.
Geri and Jim Wisniewski caught their first sails and
wacked their first wahoo.
Brothers Michael and Joe Connolly caught their first
Pacific Sails.
Rachel Hurley managed to release her first Pacific
Sail as well.
Chad and Karl Seelig both released their first Pacific
sails. Karl caught his first Roosterfish and Chad ate
his first live Sardine!
Things seem to be warming up. I predict a lot of Sails
in the near future.
Adios for now,
Christopher Dinwiddie
