Happy Easter Everyone!
The Easter bunny brought blue water in close this week. I saw my first bait ball so far this season. The Tuna and Porpoise demolished it after we scooped up a few hundred sardines with the bucket. We were less than a mile offshore when we experienced this. It was
pretty neat to see how organized the fish were. They took turns feeding. Tuna crashed the party once the boat drifted far enough away. It would have been great to get some underwater shots of this, but the camera was back at the house. We were running goggle eyes out to some of the boats, so we did not even have a hook on board. Talk about a missed opportunity. The Tuna were between 30 and 50lbs.
This is great news! The Sails come in amazing numbers once the sardines arrive.
This was the first week of 2006 where the anglers fish 3 days. Several boats fished 2 different crews within the same week. Keep that in mind as you read the report.
6 lucky Anglers caught their very first Black Marlin this week. There were 11 first Pacific Sailfish caught this week as well. The Roosterfish and the Cubera Snapper are buying what we are selling. Several folks had some fun on topwater, while others worked
the live bait angle.
A number of anglers caught their fishing highlights on video. This is always a blast to see fresh footage of the fish they just released that day. The guys were pretty happy with the results, the fish put on quite a show. It is so great to be able to hit rewind and see
it all one more time.
The Action:
10 Black Marlin were tagged this week.
21 Sailfish were released.
60 Tuna were caught. The largest was 112lbs.
3 Dorado
18 Amberjack
14 Roosterfish
38 Snapper
1 Grouper
Angler Scott "The Bursa Man" Bursa tagged his first Black Marlin. They said she was roughly 400lbs. He also caught his first Pacific Sail. This "dude" had a nice hat, was a hell of a guitar player, and did some pretty work with a video camera.
He was filming Jeff Maggio's first and second Black Marlin. The second fish was a little larger, but the first one was a dancing fool. The video they caught says it all. In the words of a friend, "Words just can't describe how cool this place is, you gotta get it on video." I have to agree. Those guys were fishing with veteran fish killer Isauro. They loved this
captain. He is truly a piece of work. The guy does not have a clue how to use his GPS, but he lines up the mountains and gets the job done. Maggio said, " We could not have been any happier. The week was slow for some boats. I would pick this same captain and crew if I could do it all over again. They were top notch, and a blast to fish with.
Ron Hilton caught a big nasty Cubera, his first. He also tagged his first Black Marlin.
Joseph Blade whipped a Pacific Sail, his first and hammered his first Roosterfish as well as his first Cubera Snapper.
Aubrey Lowery caught his first Pacific Sail.
Charles "The Reel" McCoy caught a 40lb Cubera Snapper.
Josh Leininger caught and released his first Pacific Sail.
Scott Walter and Kirk Doss landed a 35lb Roosterfish.
Harry Mason released his first Black Marlin.
Brian Leininger released his first Sail.
Jim Rhodes, Wayne Schroeder and Joe Renison each released their first Pacific Sail.
Joe managed to catch 42lb Cubera and a nice 40lb Amberjack.
Photographer Hal Gahm caught a 46lb Rooster. Jim Rhodes also caught a nice Amberjack, she was right there at 35lbs.
Leroy Sisco of Texas Trophy Hunters caught his first Cubera Snapper. He also caught his first Yellowfin Tuna.
Davis Lowery released his first Black Marlin and lost a heart breaker of a Tuna right at the boat. He said the tuna was the biggest he had ever seen.
Peter Leininger caught and released his first Pacific Sail.
Harvey Holmes Jr. came all the way from New York to tag his first Black Marlin.
He also caught his first Amberjack, Roosterfish and a 32lb Cubera.
William Blade managed to release his first Pacific Sail. He too, caught a nice Cubera and a heck of a Rooster.
Stand by for next weeks report.
