The week started off with a bang. This week we had a lot of anxious anglers. They were salivating the whole flight down. We did our best to get the crews off the plane and on the water as quickly as possible. One boat returned from a half day fishing with 8 Wahoo in the box. That is what we like to see! The rest of the week proved to be very special for all of our satisfied customers. We celebrated dozens of firsts and a Grand Slam!

The Action:

The crews went straight to work. They left the dock to make bait on the reef and then out to the fishing grounds where dreams come true. Fishing here is exceptional, but the best sensation is that you know you have very strong odds in your favor. The statistics say that you are fishing in one of the best places in the world. If you have baits out, the fish of a lifetime could happen at any moment.

Tony Novelly put a huge group of anglers together to come fish The Tropic Star Lodge. George Davis and Don Bedell came to see what Tony was talking about. George found out first with a 400lb Blue Marlin. Second, Don Bedell battled a 350lb Black Marlin. These guys wrapped up their first full day of fishing with a large 135lb Pacific Sail. This was George Davis’s first Sail. This gave them a Grand Slam their first time out. They were fishing aboard Miss Canada with legendary Captain Isauro.

Mr. Tony Novelly and crew fished aboard Miss Australia with Captain Candelo. They were targeting Marlin. They released a handful of Sails but were slow to find what they were after. These guys had a blast regardless. Their whole crew did very well overall.

Mid week new anglers hopped aboard the same boat to target Marlin as well. Francoise Boutrand tagged his first Blue Marlin, which was roughly 350-pounds. Later in the week Alain Duquesnoy released a 500-pound Black Marlin. 5-Dorado made their last leaps before finding their way to the bottom of the fish box. These folks were a treat to host. They gave our staff a chance to brush up on our French. They had plenty of great things to say about Captain Candelo and crew.

Bill DePriest Sr. and his son Bill Depriest Jr. flew south from California. They came to Piñas to do some serious fishing. They played musical boats trying to find one that really matched their style. First it was Green and then they tried Blue. Blue seemed to work out best for them. Captain Gustavo was at the helm of Miss England. Bill Sr. caught his first Blue Marlin. This fish was estimated to be 350lbs. Son, Bill Jr. caught his first Black Marlin, which happened to be the same size.

Steve Stock landed 2 huge Yellowfin Tuna weighing in at 152 and 127lbs. Steve also caught a 50lb Roosterfish and 2 Sailfish - in just 2-days of fishing! Steve and his wife, Diana celebrated their 30th wedding anniversary. Steve was landlocked that day!

Ken Martin, Clay and Linda Smith and Addison and Michelle Sovine all fished together at one time or another aboard Miss Puerto Rico. Captain Armando was at the helm for an epic week of fishing. The first day out, Linda Smith and Ken Martin both released their first Blue Marlin. They had two other shots at Blues, but did not cash in. Another day this crew released 5-Pacific Sails. Ken, Addison and Clay all released their first Sails. Add 2 Dolphin, 8 Tuna, 2 Amberjacks, 3 Wahoo and 3 Roosterfish. “Great Captain and mate, these guys really know their stuff,” commented Ken Martin. This crew had a total of 9-Sails. We asked Linda what was her favorite thing about Tropic Star? She replied, “Reeling in a 450lb Blue Marlin!”

Louis Graziadio and Viryk Kiriniv came south with the Tony Novelly extravaganza. In their quiver they had a bunch of great fishing experience and the famous “Hair Race”. This crew fished aboard Miss Panama with Captain Dagoberto. These guys put tags in 2-Blue Marlin and released 3-Sails on their second day out. Add 6-Tuna, 3-Wahoo and a beautiful Dorado and you will know why these guys keep coming back for more.

Gabriel Noriega and John Fleckinstein came to fish Tropic Star. Gabriel came here with his father back in 1964. These two fished with rookie Captain Walter aboard the Miss Scandia. John released his first Pacific Sail. These guys were here for a short visit. They were targeting Marlin and wound up with some Sails. There were no complaints whatsoever. Gabriel Noriega said, “Thanks for everything, everybody treated us really special. Everybody was great! See you soon.”

Tight Lines,
Christopher Dinwiddie
