Aug 6 - 13
This week was full of happy customers. The big Tuna made their presence known. One Tuna broke 300-pounds! The number of Sails dwindled, while the Marlin were prevalent and hungry. Three boats boasted Grand Slams! 14 anglers caught their very first Marlin here at Tropic Star last week and 13 guests caught their first Pacific Sails. Again, the wasabi got a workout in the kitchen after the anglers had their fun on the water.
Numbers:
14-Black Marlin
6-Blue Marlin
38-Sailfish
7-Dorado
14-Tuna
15-Wahoo
20-Roosterfish
4-Snapper
The Action:
Ed Jillson brought his family to Tropic Star for his son Jared’s birthday. They fished with Capt. Gustavo on Miss England. This family caught a Grand Slam consisting of a Black, a Blue and a Pacific Sailfish all in one day. Jared caught his first Black Marlin. I am not sure what he wished for when he blew out the candles, but I know the Marlin had no problem finding his boat. He battled a Black and a Blue Marlin. These were his first Marlin. Jared had his hands full. This crew went rock fishing to mix things up. They came back with plenty to talk about. They caught 1 Wahoo, 2 Amberjack and released 9 Roosterfish. Add 4 Sails and you get a pretty darn good birthday week. The bottom line is, be careful what you wish for!
Dennis Cataldo brought his family south as well. Dennis did most of the angling, and had his plate full. He landed a 300.4lb Yellowfin Tuna! The rest of the crew consisted of son Michael, daughter Alicia and wife Mayra Cataldo. All of them caught their first Pacific Sailfish while fishing on Miss Canada. This boat also flew flags showing a Grand Slam! Mayra released a 450lb Black Marlin and Dennis released a 250lb Blue Marlin on the same day. Their son Michael caught a Sail which set them up for a Grand Slam. If this was not enough they went out two days later and did it again! After such great days they wanted to mix it up with some inshore action. They went rock fishing and released 4 Roosterfish after taking quick photos. The total for this lucky family was 2 Blue Marlin, 2 Black Marlin, 6 Sailfish, 1 Giant Yellowfin, 4 Roosterfish, 4 Wahoo and an Amberjack. Not too shabby!
Ed Henry, Bob Richardson, William Capehart and his son Bill came to Tropic Star to stir things up. That they did! This crew had a blast with a 228, 195, and a 148lb Tuna. Three of the four caught their first Black Marlin and Bob released his first Turtle. All of these guys released their first Pacific Sail. Near shore they asked Capt. Candelo for some help with the Roosterfish and Snapper. They released 7 Rooosters, 2 huge Tarpon and landed 2 Wahoo. Good stuff.
Robert and Carolyn Hummer came down to fish with Capt. Libardo aboard Miss Costa Rica. They were smiling with 8-Wahoo on a half day trip. The next day these two almost had a Grand Slam with a Black Marlin, a 400lb Blue Marlin and a Sail. They lost the Black Marlin before it could be considered a catch. They made up for this the next day. Carolyn released 2 Black Marlin. One was 350lbs and the other was 200lbs. She landed her first species all across the board. We gave Carolyn a Grand Slam award for the week!
Mr. Charles McSherry flew all of the way from Scotland with his two sons Jamie and Scott to fish Tropic Star. These guys knew what they were doing. First off, they renamed their boat Miss Scotland. “How can you have Miss England without Miss Scotland?” Charles McSherry. They were winners on the water and winners at the poker table. At this very moment there is a 300-pound Blue Marlin swimming around the Pacific with Jamie’s tag in it. It is the fish that Jamie released aboard Miss Scotland with Capt. Maso. Another day this crew lost a heartbreaker of a Marlin right at the boat. They could not fly the flag, but they said they enjoyed the best part of the fight. They made up for this the next day when Charles tagged a 400lb Black. The boys wrestled 2-Yellowfin to the boat along with a big Cubera and a Dorado. Include 4 Pacific Sails and you have yourself a full house.
Once the McSherry crew departed, John Scaildone and Bruce Shurman took their place aboard Miss Alaska. These two caught a Sail and fought a 500lb Blue for over an hour before the fish broke free. Their presence was demanded in the states, so their trip was cut short. We hope to see these two back for more in the near future.
Miss Puerto Rico was busy this week with two different crews. Chris Page and Russ Kodner were on the hunt for Marlin. Big Marlin! They spent a lot of time fishing live baits looking for the fat lady in the blue getup. They were covered up in Marlin their first day. Five fish batted their baits around but not one of the fish cooperated. These two were optimistic and kept the baits out the rest of their visit. A 140lb Tuna was a highlight for Russ and Mr. Page released his first Pacific Sail. I watched them release one of their Sails. I have never seen anything so graceful. Nice work Russ!
The next group was Gary Morris and Eric Gloe. These two guys were smiling the whole time they were here. They were on a business trip and pulled a last minute trump card and headed our way. Turns out it was a great call. Gary released his first Black Marlin the first day and Eric Gloe released his first Sail.
Ralph and Catherine Martin traveled from Alabama to Piñas with their nephew McArthur Gill. They released 9 Pacific Sails. They raised some Marlin, but never hooked up. The Dorado and tuna were biting for Miss Island Star. They put two Dorado in the fish box for appetizers. Three tuna came off this boat for sashimi as well. Please tell everyone back in Alabama “Roll Tide!” for me and come back and see us.
Mr. Joseph Crookshank flew to Tropic star with his son Joseph Jr. and friend Alex Radford. They came from Lake Charles, Louisiana in pursuit of the muy grande Black Marlin. These guys were elated to fish with Dagoberto aboard Miss Panama. Joe Jr. caught his first Black Marlin. This fish was estimated to weigh 350lbs. The crew released 7 Sails, 3 Black Marlin and 1 Blue Marlin. Alex put some muscle into his first Black Marlin and released his first Sail. These guys went out in style with a Grand Slam on their last day.
Tight Lines,
Christopher Dinwiddie
