Hennie & Ursula Marais manage to keep you in fish stories. |
December 23 - 31
Another amazing fishing year has come to a close and we ended with more
records broken.
The Salow and Harkavy families spent their Christmas holiday with us and
their daughters, Anne and Mary Salow and Heather and Arielle Harkavy became
fast friends before the plane even landed in Pinas. The Salow's were with
us last Christmas and Jeff Harkavy brought his family, including his Mom
Marcia and his wife Jodi to Pinas for their first Pinas family vacation.
The Andrews were there as well and Ursula, Gabriella and myself enjoyed a
great Christmas party for all our employees children, all 250 of them.
This year we had clowns, face painting, Spiderman and a puppet show which
thrilled the children, as well as the Pinas employees alike. Ursula and
Lorena did a great job organizing the party and making sure all 250 kids had
a special present under the tree as well.
Oh yes, we also did some fishing and Bill and Kimberly Salow had the joy of
fishing with Mary, 14 and Anne, 11 and witnessing both girls catching more
Jr. World Record this year. Anne caught a Rainbow Runner 8 lb. 2 oz. and a
Mullet Snapper 21.4 lb, both potential Jr. Angler World Records. Mary
caught a Black Skipjack "bonito" 7 lb. 6 oz. for potential Jr. Angler World
Record. Heather Harkavy, 9 years old caught a Cubera Snapper 43.4 lb. for
a Potential Jr. World Record in the Small Fry Division and caught a much
bigger one the day before. However, knowing the IGFA rules, Heather
disqualified her first catch -- as the mate handed her the rod. Later in
the day while fishing from the dock, Heather hooked into a Jack Crevelle and
had the fight of her life on a spinning rod. We quickly let her jump on the
Miss USA, as the Crevalle headed for deeper water. Heather was loosing her
strength, but I rigged her a harness which helped, but we knew we had to
stop the fish from getting into deeper waters. Turning the boat brought the
fish to the surface and gave me a shot at the leader and a quick gaff gave
Heather a potential World Record. Neither I, nor Heather, will easily
forget this magnifcient 16 lb. 7 oz. Jack Crevalle and Heather did a
wonderful job. Seven year old Arielle, caught the largest Sailfish of the
trip after learning a few pointers from her 70 year old Grandma Marcia who
landed the first Sailfish with skills learned more than 30 years ago when
she fished tournaments in Florida and the Bahamas. Arielle also caught
Yellowfin, Dolphin and Amberjack. All the Harkavys caught sailfish,
including two hook ups for Jeff on fly. Eight Amberjack up to 47 pounds, a
dozen beautiful Yellowfin Tuna, 8 Dolphin and 2 Wahoo in the 40 pound range,
one caught by Jodi and the other by Heather, added to the Harkavys quarry
for the week.
Oh, by the way -- the also released 10 Sailfish!
After Christmas, the rest of our group arrived before the New Year for 3
days of fishing. Ron Williams brought his fishing buddies and their wives
this year. Ron is one of our best Ambassadors. You can probably find Ron
at the Dallas Safari Club Show on Jan. 6-10, helping Raleigh and Trish
Werking curaling more Texans to visit his favorite fishing hole. Ron
brought Chase and Kim Williams who fished on the Tropic Star and released 15
Sailfish and 11 Dolphin in 3 days. John and his son Shane McKininey fished
the MIss Canada and released 23 Sailfish and 21 Dolphin and Billy Williams
and his grandson, Nick Monacelli fished the Miss Costa Rica and released 5
Sails and 5 Dolphin. Jerry and Patricia Kissick and Jim and Jill Hutcheson
fished the Miss Panama and released 11 Sailfish and 9 Dolphin. John, Helge
and their son Robert Sullivan fished the Miss Puerto Rico and released a
Black Marlin, 11 Sailfish and 9 Dolphin. Mark Blair and Brendan McCarthy
fished the Miss Spain and released 6 Sails and 7 Dolphin and Mark released
his first Sail and Dolphin on fly. Jim Hardy and Suzanne Christian fished
the Miss Scandia and released 15 Sailfish and 20 Dolphin.
Our New Year's Party was fun with good food and good company and we wish you
all the Best New Year ever and our thoughts and prayers are with those that
suffered so much in the last week around the world.
See ya soon,
Hennie
