Dec 25- Jan 2
The fishing this week was hot and cold. Stick around; I will clarify this statement in a moment. The statistics show some outstanding numbers, but there were some slow days for a few boats. Steve Lippai does not know what slow is. He was tearing up the billfish day in and day out. He told me that his friends back home at Pine Key would not believe that he caught 3 Marlin in one day. Believe it! He had a grand slam all by himself.
There were 15 Black Marlin tagged, 7 Blues and 1 Striped Marlin this week.
143 Dorado were caught, many large fish were released. Folks were pulling mostly teasers to keep away from the Dorado while keeping a pitch bait ready.
Captain Candelo worked along with Mate Mario to post some impressive numbers. They caught two out of the three Black Marlin bites they had and missed a big Blue. Thirty Dorado found their hooks and several mosters were released. These guys went 6 for 7 on Pacific Sails and managed to stay still long enough to bring up a couple of hefty Amber Jacks. Keith Talley caught his first Black Marlin on Christmas Day. How ‘bout them apples?
Ronnie and Kim Williams brought their son back to Tropic Star to fish with Alberto on the Miss Tropic Star. Their stay lasted longer than this report will show…so bear with us…next weeks report will include all of the stats. For this week, they boasted 24 Dordo and 4 Sails. It got better, trust me. The quote of the week was, “look for a point and birds working.” I was not sure if they were talking about fishing or quail hunting.
The McKinney Family has the same situation as the Williams. They caught a bunch of fish…but you will not see all of the numbers. Stay tuned for the next fishing report. This week they tagged 1 Black Marlin, 18 Dorado and 4 Sails. J.C. caught his first Black and his first sail, while Jackson caught his first Black as well. Sorry, I spilled the beans for next weeks report with that last comment. Good work guys.
The Petmecky and Salazar crew came south and fished with Maso aboard the Miss Spain. They tagged 3 Blacks, 1 Sail, 1 Tuna, 11 Dorado and 1 Amberjack. Steve Petmecky and his father Dr. Fred Petmecky caught their first Black Marlin. Dr. Jessie Salazar caught his first Sail, and his daughter Jessica caught a nice 42lb Dorado. They came, they saw and as we say in Louisiana, “They passed a good time.”
Don and Jennifer Evans flew down to fish aboard the Miss Scandia with Captain Chito. They caught 1 Black, 4 Sails and 6 Dorado. Both caught their first Pacific Sail, and Don tagged his first Black. These two were pretty happy. I hope we get to see them soon.
Ted Lund and Stu Dunn fished with Captain Gustavo aboard Miss England. They were fly fishing and doing some conventional as well. They tagged a Black, Stu’s First. Ted caught a nice Dorado on the Fly. It weighed in at 37.4lbs. That was one of 14 Dorado. Many of these Dorado were released. These two had several Sails and one nice AJ. Look for Ted’s story in Fly-fishing Salt Water Magazine sometime soon.
The Cuomo’s came down on their Honeymoon. They came all the way from Italy to fish Amber Jacks. Antonello caught his first Black, first Blue, his first Pacific Sail and had a Grand Slam for the week. His lovely wife caught her first Pacific Sail. There was excellent fishing aboard the Miss Costa Rica. Once again, a great call for honeymooners to come relax at Tropic Star Lodge.
Brace yourself for this report. Miss South Africa was called to duty to carry Steve Lippai to the promise land. In 3 Days he caught 2 Blacks and 3 Blues. He was on fire. This lucky man was fishing alone and has some of the finest angling opportunities you can imagine. He was complaining because he said that his friends would not believe the statistics. In one day he tagged 2 Blues, 1 Black and a Sail to make a Grand Slam for the day. I have to include that he lost 2 big fish. One got away after close to a 3 hour battle. It was a heartbreaker of a fight at sunset on the reef. Steve made up for this with his Grand Slam. I am delighted to say that this could not have happened to a kinder human being. Mr. Lippai, you were a cool customer. Come back and see us. Your boat is waiting.
Bart Bias and Gary Gordon came down from Alaska to fish aboard Miss Alaska. It was a lot warmer down here I know, but these guys were hoping to find some more fish. It was tough for other customers to watch Steve run out of tags while they tried to keep up. These 2 tagged a striped Marlin, released a few Sails and caught 14 nice Dorado. Better Luck Next time.
Scott Dingle and David Roberts came down with Stephen Dingle and Sergio Santovenia. These four fished on the Panama and on the Darien. Their Captains were Dagoberto and Walter. Sergio, David and Scott caught their first Black Marlin ever. David and Sergio caught their first Pacific Sails. Their 2 boat totals for the week were 4 Blacks, 2 Blues, 5 Sails, 1 Tuna, 17 Dorado, 3 Amberjack and 3 Snapper. Not too shabby.
I trust you all had a great Holiday and we wish you the best for this New Year.
May you have a prosperous 2006 and with that, quit reading and come fish where the big fish are.
