Dec 4 - 10

This week was full of surprises. We had a blast with Honeymooners, TV shows and tournament winners. The Marlin were hungry and plentiful. Sails were cooperative, and so were the Dorado. There were 4-Grand Slams this week. Two potential world records were weighed here as well.

Mr. Ikola, Charlie Rhoades and Kurt Hellweg each landed their first Blue Marlin aboard the Pescalo. The Pescalo is a private boat that joined our private boat membership for the week. She is a pretty 48ft Bertram. She looks proud when surrounded by the fleet of 31´s. There were several nice Dorado landed aboard this same vessel.

Mr. Bill Brogan came to Tropic Star with limited fishing experience. He put tags in 3 Marlin and 2 sails in one day all by himself. There was a captain and a mate aboard, but he was a solo angler that day. Another day, Raleigh Werking joined Bill aboard the Isla Star to rack up a couple more potential world records. The species was mullet snapper and the line class was 8lbs and 20 lbs. The fish both weighed in the upper teens. Good work! Mr Brogan fished solo a fair amount this week. To his credit he posted the following numbers. 4 Sails, 4 Blue Marlin, 1 Black Marlin, 14 Dorado and a big Snapper. It was a busy week for Captain Gavilan. He has been tearing up the billfish this month. I believe his boat has already tagged over 10 marlin this month. That is one a day where I come from. Excellent work!

Reel Adventures TV show was here for their second show at Tropic Star Lodge. They shot four days fishing and landed Three Blue Marlin. Each fish was caught on artificial and put on a great show. The guys brought an underwater camera man and burned some great footage. Dorado were everywhere. The guys were looking to get away from them. That is something that doesn´t happen too often back in Florida. Look out for that episode sometime in the near future.

Jody Bright flew a long way with his cameras to film an episode of Pacific Expeditions. He was filming the Maui Jim Series tournament winner´s trip to TSL. The winner was Mr. Preston Stofer. Preston brought his very good friend Martita down to see what the talk was all about. They were pleasantly surprised with a whole lot of offshore action. Martita caught here first Pacific Sail and then trumped it with her first Black Marlin. That Marlin was roughly 450 pounds and was a tough fish. They caught numerous Marlin and Sails this week. The highlight of their trip was a grand slam for the boat. The same day Martita caught her Black, Preston tamed a Blue and passed the rod back for Martita to work the sail. Not too shabby. They caught 3 Blues and 2 Black Marlin this week. Add a dozen Dorado and some snapper and you will get a pretty good idea of how much fun they had. The best part is that the action will be on the OLN network fairly soon. Look for the Pacific Expeditions on OLN and you might get hooked. Thanks for the hat and the lures yáll!

The award for coolest honeymoon destination goes to Brendan and Jenny Mulholland. This happy couple came down to have and blast. They had a banner week here at Tropic Star Lodge. The Marlin were very aggressive towards the baits behind Miss Australia. The first day they struggled to get hooks where they wanted them. That first day they tagged a Black Marlin, but the hookup ratio was nothing to brag about. Once that marlin was tagged, then out came the fly rod. Brendan managed to release 4 Sails on the fly! He tamed a few nice Dorado in stride as well. The impressive thing about these two is how many cameras they actually had aboard. If the one with the cameras fell over board it would be tough to swim for sure. They burned up a bunch of film because Jenny caught a Grand Slam for the Week, and so did Brendan. They released 3 Blues and 2 Blacks this week along with the fly caught sails and some nice Dorado. This was their first week marlin fishing and they were pros after the second day. I was really impressed with the choice for the destination of their honeymoon. I hope that they had as much fun with us as we had with them.

Jim Finnerty and Joan Kennedy stopped by the Lodge for a last minute vacation. They managed to release a handful of Sails and boated 6 nice Dorado. The snapper cooperated for them as well. This boat fished only three days this week. I know that they were looking for a big Black Marlin, but it did not happen aboard the Miss Scandia this trip. These two had a very good attitude and were hope to see them back again real soon.

Happy Holidays,
Christopher Dinwiddie
Dock Master
