Feb 18 - Feb 23
This has been a most eventful “Marlin” week with an incredible kick off of:
14 Marlin on Sunday
11 on Monday
13 Marlin on Tuesday
A total of 55 Marlin for the week!
Some boats came home with up to 4 Blacks for the day! Needless to say we had a lot of happy anglers this week.
Starting off the week with 2 Black Marlin on the first day aboard the Panama saw Carlos De Lasa getting his first Black Marlin. He was accompanied by his father, Jose De Lasa and his uncle Miguel, who is an old friend of the lodge. They released 2 Pacific Sailfish and were then rewarded with an outstanding day where they got to release 4 Black Marlin. They ended the week with 1 more Black Marlin bring their tally for the week to 7 Black Marlin releases. Excellent by any standards!
Mark Mahaffey knows how to combine a passion for fishing, a good vacation with his family and coordinating a tournament. He fished along with his daughter, Kiley and friend Kelli Earl, aboard the Australia. His wife Marianne, son Thomas and daughter-in-law Shannon fished on the Darien. What an awesome week it was for all of them. Marianne, Shannon and Kelli all had the pleasure of releasing their first Black Marlin. Kelli got into what they thought was a Dorado and turned out to be her second Black Marlin. Shannon was ecstatic catching a huge Dorado of about 50lbs. The veterans, Mark, Thomas and Kiley each released Marlin during the course of the week. Their combined total for the week was 11 Black Marlin, 1 Blue Marlin and 1 Sailfish. For you dads out there, take a tip from this man.
Mark and Nelda Scharringhausen hailing from Texas made their first visit to Tropic Star Lodge and found a mother load of Black Marlin. They went two consecutive days with 3 Black Marlin a day. One of them a monster weighing an estimated 600lbs. Nelda got to release her first Black Marlin. Mark fished off his week with a Striped Marlin while Nelda caught a beautiful Snapper of about 25lbs. It does not get better!
Michael and Shiela Bonsignore were in for just as an exciting week aboard the Miss Alaska.
Sheila got to release her first Black Marlin and together the 2 of them amassed a total of 6 Black Marlin, 1 of them in the 600lb range. They also had a good time catching a number of Dorado.
We were once again joined by Rafael Monjo, his lovely wife Angelina, his brother, Jaime and sister in law Pilar. Rafael fished aboard the Florida while Jaime and Pilar were on the Tropic Star. Jaime and Pilar enjoyed an incredible week and relaeased 5 Black Marlin. Rafael had a good workout with the 2 he got to release in 1 day.
Thomas and Sue Ann Rushing were in high spirits all week as they both got to release their first Black Marlin on the first day of fishing, as well as some large Dorado. Thomas was also able to better his personal best when he released a monster Blue Marlin of over 600lbs. Well done Thomas. In between they were kept busy and had a lot of fun with Dorado and Amberjack.
The doctors from North Carolina, Whit Mims, Kent Kercher, Greg Bensch and Brad Jacobs, went 3 out of 4 for the week. Whit, Kent and Greg had a ball abourd the Miss Spain releasing their first Black Marlin each.
Our old friend Ed McCarthy had a frightening experience of being pulled overboard while fighting a large Black Marlin. Fortunately he remained calm and relaxed the drag. He passed the rod up to his fishing mate Kim Evans and got back into the boat, he then proceeded to continue the fight and got the Marlin to the boat so as to release it, scary stuff! Later in the week, Ed caught a Striped Marlin.
Enrique Sosa got to release his first Black Marlin while his nephew Carlos Saladriga, Jr. got to release his first Stripe Marlin fishing with Gustavo on the Miss England.
Catch for the Week:
Black Marlin 49
Blue Marlin 3
Striped Marlin 3
Pacific Sailfish 4
Dorado 37
Amberjack 1
Snapper 2
Tight Lines,
Hennie
