Jan 14 - Jan 21 2006
This week was full of fish Tales and Laughs. We saw 3 Grand Slams and boat loads of smiles. There was a satellite phone call to a Rabbi one morning that paid off for Kirk Weisman. Two Dollar bills were floating around the dock every morning for good luck.
We had some sad times too. Several Marlin came up tail wrapped and were unable to be revived. We removed the gonads and took measurements of the fish, in the name of science.
The Tuna showed up and so did the big Dorado. A few Dorado were landed on Fly gear. The largest Yellow fin was 207 pounds. The biggest Dorado was in the 60-pound range.
12 Anglers caught their first Black Marlin. 6 Anglers released their first Blue Marlin. 4 Anglers released their first Pacific Sail. John Cushing managed to land his first Black Marlin and it was on Stand up gear. His fish weighed approximately 500-Pounds. There were 32 Marlin caught this week. Half were Black and half were Blue Marlin.
Ed McCarthy fished with his son Mac aboard Miss Scandia with Captain Chito. They had a blast for a few days and Ed switched out his hard working son for a friend named Kim Evans. These guys tore it up. Kim released a big Black Marlin. Chito estimated the fish to weigh some where between 600 and 700-Pounds. Holy Guacamole! This was Kim’s first Black Marlin. He also released his first Blue Marlin as well. Good stuff guys. Kim said he was, “Thrilled with the experience and will definitely be back.”
Ralph and Catherine Martin came down from Alabama. They were aboard the Miss Island Star. Catherine caught her first Black Marlin. Ralph caught a Black as well. These two are extremely easy going and have been having fun while fishing here for years. Gavilan was at the wheel for 2 Black Marlin, 14 Sails and 9 Dorado.
Kirk Weisman called his Rabbi from the Miss Darien to ask for a little help. Kirk’s first Black Marlin crashed the bait not two minutes after he hung up the sat phone. Billy Howell landed a Blue Marlin mid day. Kirk, not one to waste an opportunity, called his Rabbi again and asked for a sail to make a Grand Slam. He must be living right because a sail hit their belly bait and they go down in the record books as a Grand Slam for the day. These two just met here and had a blast! Kirk was handing out two-dollar bills to everyone on the dock for good luck. Everyone was cashing in on the marlin bites. Guys like this make for a fun week. Thanks for sharing the luck and here are the numbers. 1 Black, 3 Blue Marlin and 9 Sails. 1 Tuna, 18 Dorado and a Cubera Snapper complete the list for Miss Darien.
Guy Harvey ,Charlie Forman, Sue Ann Forman, Etienne Gele, Ken Kavanaugh and Ricky Westphel all were here to film a fishing series that attempted to place sat tags in Black Marlin. They had success on two counts. It is a really good thing they are doing, trying to figure out the movements of these highly migratory pelagics. They fished aboard some private boats and aboard Miss Tropic Star. They had enough gear to sink a smaller boat. They shot pictures of fish above the water line and below. It is a really well done production when you have Guy Harvey adding input. These folks enjoyed great fishing on all the boats they fished. There were several Marlin tagged, which is what they were after.
Dr. Skille and his wife fished aboard the Miss Alaska. They tagged 3 Black Marlin and a Blue. These 2 have had a blast while in Pinas. The Skille’s enjoyed fishing with both Isauro and Armando as their Captains.
William Wagner IV caught a Grand Slam of Firsts this week. He also caught a
207 Pound Yellow Fin Tuna. Victor Tedesco caught his first Black Marlin and his friend Ronald Racca caught his first Pacific Sail and Blue Marlin. These guys were red hot aboard Miss Australia with Captain Candelo calling the shots.
John Cushing caught a 500 Pound Black Marlin on stand up gear. It was quite a battle; it was John’s first marlin. John is a striper guide in Maine. He came down here to warm up a little bit and I think he broke a sweat. Miss Panama released 4 Marlin, 8 Sails and caught 12 Dorado plus 1 tuna.
The Smith family fished aboard Costa Rica with Libardo as their Captain. They released 2 Blues and 1 Black Marlin. They caught 19 Dorado and released 16 Sails. Melanie and Sharon Smith released their first Sails. Gary, Timothy and Travis Smith released their first Black Marlin. They had a big group, so half fished aboard Miss Spain with Maso.
Miss Spain released 3 Blacks and 2 Blue Marlin. Jamie Christian was in on the action too. He managed to tag his first Blue Marlin with the Smith crew. Not a bad way to spend a week off.
Debbie and Frank Busher were aboard the Miss Puerto Rico this week. They had a blast releasing a Blue Marlin and 2 Sails. They also enjoyed the beauty of 17 Dorados dancing. These fish were large and hard to handle.
Miss England released 3 Marlin this week with the Scharrer’s as the anglers. Ryan caught his first Black and Blue Marlin. John caught his first Black with Gustavo. These two caught a little of everything. They had a pair of tuna. They released 10 Sails and caught 13 nice Dorado.
Jason Canin and Robert Browning fished aboard the Miss Canada with Captain Jose. It is a good thing we like eating Dorado. They caught 24 Dorado this week. They also released 11 Sails and one Blue Marlin.
