Jan 23-28
We released 20 black marlin from 40 strikes and saw another 25 on the surface that did not eat. 1 blue marlin released and 133 sailfish.
Thursday was the best day with 8 marlin releases. On Friday the cold water moved in and shut the fishing down.
The Action:
Neil and Anne Patrick from Australia fished the Miss Spain. Neil had a superb five days of fishing. The highlight for him was when he released a black marlin estimated AT over a thousand pounds! This magical fish length was more than 14 ft and not only did Guy Harvey get great video footage they also tagged it with a satellite tag. Neil also released 3 black marlin and 6 sails. Two of Neil's black marlin were released on his birthday- well done Neil!
Guy Harvey joined us last week to shoot another episode for his show on OLN, Portraits From the Deep. Accompanying Guy was Bill Shedd from AFTCO, Guys two cameramen Ken and Dee, as well as our dockmaster Whit Davis- who was on board to place satellite tags. These sat-tags, which are being placed on black marlin, are from Mike Domeier and the PIER Institute. They are six-month pop-off tags that will allow us to find out the movements of these fish throughout the Pacific. The bite turned on last week and allowed Guy, Whit and Bill to place tags on five healthy blacks, which ranged from 200 lbs. up to Neil Patrick's 1000 lb. black. Two of Bill Shedd's blacks were sat-tagged, as well as Neil Patrick's, Frank Rodriguez's and Mike Bonsignore´s marlin.
As other boats would hook up, Whit would be transferred between boats to place the tags on as many fish as possible. We found out on February 1st from Mike Domeier that all of the fish that were tagged are still alive and well. Even Neil's grander is still doing fine which was fought for over three hours and was only landed thanks to Guy Harvey.
At around the three hour mark the huge fish was still down about 60 feet and wouldn't come any closer for Neil on the 50lb gear. Guy threw his tank on and dove down to the fish to clip on an 80lb setup to the leader along with the 50lb line! Bill Shedd was harnessed up to the 80, and with Bill and Neil now fighting this fish at the same time, it still managed to peal off line with no problem. After a few more minutes the fish was brought boatside, sat-tagged and released.
We are all looking forward to receiving the information Mike Domeier´s project is going to bring us. Please feel free to contact Hennie or Whit to find out how other guests here at the lodge can participate in this project.
Irene and Edward Friedman, John and Phyllis Crimmins fished the Miss Darien and Island Star, they released four black marlin and 22 sailfish. Irene caught her first black marlin- well done. A 400lb bull shark gave Irene a good work out too.
Mark, Marianne and Kiley Mahaffey fished the Miss Australia. They released 1 blue marlin and 15 sailfish. Their blue marlin ate two baits and gave them a great fight- well done.
Jason Jacobs, Miranda Swoyer, Robert and Jane Morris fished the Miss Scandia. They released one black, one blue marlin and 5 sailfish. Some sailfish and dorado on the fly were great fun. Congratulations to Mandy and Jason who were engaged during their week at the lodge.
Richard Orlandi and Charlie Cannizzaro fished the Miss Canada. They released one black marlin on Friday and 13 sailfish during the week. A bit slow for these guys who were concentrating on the marlin.
Ronald Sales and Chris Barbara fished the Miss Florida. They released 10 sails on their first day out, ended up with one blue, one black marlin and 22 sailfish for the week, Chris also fought a 450lb tiger shark.
Charlie Forman and Craig Keniepp fished the Miss England. Craig was very excited when he released an estimated 800lb black. While fighting the black, another black which was all lit up sniffed at the baits but no luck on the second hook up. They ended up getting a second marlin before the week's end.
Michael and Sheila Bonsignore fished the Miss Puerto Rico. They fished predominately for marlin. It was a little frustrating until Michael got to release his first black marlin on Thursday and then his second on Friday. That made his week.
Frank Rodriguez brought his family to fish this magical fishery. Partying in the Palace they fished the Miss Panama and Costa Rica.
Frank's brother Chris released a blue marlin, black and sail during the week- all his firsts. Regina tagged a sailfish and released 4 more. Frank got his first black marlin.
In total they released 5 marlin and 24 sailfish. Kathleen Rodriguez was fighting a marlin- it jumped and she fought it head and tail but when they brought it up it was a shark. The marlin must have come off and the same bait grabbed up by a greedy shark. Thank you for the wonderful poem.
Craig Keniep, Chris Rodriguez and Chris Barbara all had a grand slam week, blue marlin, black marlin and sailfish!
Gone fishing,
Hennie
