Hennie & Ursula Marais manage to keep you in fish stories. |
Jan 6 - Jan 13
This week the majority of the clients were part of the George Brimhall Group. They ran a tournament amongst their group of 24 fishermen which had an interesting concept. They rotated boats daily, points were given to each angler on the boat for the total number of fish caught and released on that boat for the day. If you happened to be on a boat where everybody got a Marlin except you, you’d still receive points.
They fished 10 of our 31’s and their tournament ended with the following results:
Most Marlin per boat – shared by three anglers Rob Verbic, Dick Bauer and Brett Brimhall
Most Billfish on boats – George Brimhall with 15 Billfish
Largest Tuna – Leland Buttle – 187lbs
Most Remarkable Achievement – Mr. Smoot Brimhall released his first Blue Marlin at age 93!!
19 Anglers released their first ever billfish this past week with 14 Black Marlin and 5 Blue Marlin and most had the energy to hike to White Beach after fishing each day. These guys are always trying to break the endurance records and broke their own White Beach record of 17 minutes and made it to the Waterfall and back in less than 3 hours! They have booked the entire lodge again in 2011!
The Action:
First Black Marlin awards went to anglers, Bret Brimhall, Cullen Brimhall, David Nielsen, Guy Dryer, Jay Moyes, Jesse Brimhall, Robert Verbic, Mark Ballard and Marc Plunkett.
First Blue Marlins for anglers George Brimhall, Jacob Gold, Robert Verbic and Dick Bauer.
First Sailfish went to Jay Moyes, Ryan Brimhall, Leland Buttle, Richard Bauer, Michael Gold and Marc Plunkett.
Jay Moyes caught a nice 61lb Dorado for which he got an award as well.
The Brimhall group had an unusual double header with a Tuna and Marlin. The Marlin got away, but the 187lb tuna was caught!
Veteran guests, Frank and Debra Busher fished with Captain Isauro and they had a long hard week. Luckily for Frank things changed on Friday when the Marlin came to the surface. Frank had quite the day, raising over 10 Marlin. He said that seeing them in the waves was amazing, but the Marlin stayed tightlipped. Frank did manage to get one to bite and got a well earned release. We always enjoy seeing you both again.
Rick and Yvonne Buckley were also down for their first trip of the season and fished their regular Captain, Alberto. Releasing Sails on spinning gear had to do this week and the Marlin stayed illusive for them. Yvonne is after her 50th Black Marlin on stand up, hopefully they will have better luck during their next trip next month.
It was a privilege to reunite again with Larry Dahlberg an old time friend of mine. Larry was down to film his TV show “Hunt for Big Fish". We fished 3 days on our Bertrams and the last day we raised 2 Black Marlin, but could not get them to bite. We put teasers out and later raised a Black on the reef and pitched it a Dorado belly on a Shimano rod and reel and Larry had him on. The fish put on a great show for the camera with great jumps charging the boat and within 15 minutes he released a 360lb Black Marlin. What a great week with a great fishermen and friend. Robby Browning of the Mr. B II hosted us on his private yacht for a few days and outside we raised an average of 6 Blue Marlin a day, releasing 2 each day. It was great to get the chance to fish with Larry again and appreciate the opportunity to fish on the Mr. B as well!
So this week, I really was-
GONE FISHING
