July 17-22
This past week at Tropic Star Lodge was a great one for all of our guests, especially the kids. Six lucky anglers released their first Marlin and nineteen guests landed their first pacific Sailfish. The reef was productive as well. The variety and numbers of fish caught by the kids was remarkable. There was one more Junior World Record broken by Hobey Richey. The Sails were off to a slow start but the bite picked up as the week progressed. We saw the best results when the customers were patient while the captains and crew covered ground with belly baits. Once they located the fish, the radios started squawking and reels started screaming.
The Action:
There was a kids’ tournament that was a lot of fun. There were ten young anglers fishing and they each had their moments in the sun. Conner Anderson came in with a huge smile after he released his first Black Marlin. The Captain and crew of the Miss Scandia said that the fish was roughly 300-pounds. Harry Anderson followed suit with a nice Blue Marlin that was estimated at 500-pounds. This crew did some bottom fishing after they tried their luck with sails. The rock fishing turned out to be a crowd pleaser because the Roosterfish and the Cubera Snapper were cooperative. The Andersons brought two nice Roosters to the boat as well as a pair of Cubera Snappers. Mr. Kemp Anderson said that, “Everyone did an awesome job making our childrens’ fishing trip a fabulous experience.”
John Mann came to Tropic Star with his wife Sunday. They traveled all the way from beautiful Colorado on a friend’s suggestion. Mr. And Mrs. John Mann jumped in a panga for a little light trolling their first afternoon. Wahoo, Tuna, Dorado and Amberjack were their reward. The next day Mr. Mann was thrilled with the professional crew. “Man, these guys are good. I have fished a lot of lodges and these guys are the hardest working crews and best Captains I have ever seen at any lodge!” He was referring to Captain Walter and deckhand Wilmington aboard the Miss Darien. The Mann’s released a 250- pound Blue Marlin and four beautiful Pacific Sails. If you think it can’t get any better, you are mistaken. The next day he was smiling from ear to ear. They were one for two on Marlin strikes. He said it was “Terrific, I mean I am a stream fisherman…those fish are Awesome!” That fish he was talking about was a 300-pound Blue.
The Miss Australia had a great pair of Father/Son teams. The Richeys and the Hazeltines were the anglers. They started off with a bang-up half day right off the start. They boated 8 Tuna and 4 Wahoo. The Sailfish were slow for the Captain and crew. They managed to catch 3 Sails, 4 tuna and 4 snapper the following days. Michael Hazeltine managed to release his first Pacific Sail. There is one fish that will stand out in Hobey Richey’s mind. He landed a potential Junior World Record Cubera Snapper. The fish weighted in at 60.7 pounds! Congrats!
The whole Viljoen clan from South Africa joined us for a fishing vacation. They had a blast and all managed to release their first Pacific Sails. Anton caught a 300 pound Black Marlin the first day. It was “Unbelievable!” The sails kept them busy the last fishing day. They released 13 Sails. “This is the Best Place I have ever fished.” We had a blast hosting this family of four. Judging by the results and the fun, I think we will see this family real soon.
Miss England took great care of anglers Grant Sinnott and Harry Anderson. Both guys caught their first Marlin on the same day. Grant landed a 300 pound Black Marlin and Harry got a workout with a 500-pound Blue Marlin. Diane Eubanks put herself on the scoreboard with her first Pacific Sail. That gave the boat a Grand Slam. The crew brought back 4 wahoo, 5 Roosterfish, 1 Snapper and 4 Tuna.
Miss Alaska was graced by the presence of the Ferguson crew. They released 11 Pacific Sails on their best day. These Texans came looking for Marlin but they were not disappointed with their results. They released 16 Sails in two days fishing. “We didn’t get the big bite we were looking for, but we had a blast. The whole experience was outstanding.” Gary Ferguson, David Ferguson, and Stephen Armstrong caught their first Pacific Sails. Good job guys.
Blake Anderson Landed his first Pacific Sailfish aboard the Miss Panama. This boat did a lot of reef fishing with strong results. Their tally is as follows. 2 Roosterfish, 2 Dorado, 3 Snapper, 2 Big Brown Sharks, 1 Amberjack and a Tuna.
The Barnhardts from North Carolina came to fish here in style. Lewis caught a 250 pound Black Marlin and his fist Pacific sailfish. His son Carter managed to follows suit with his first ever Pacific Sail. These guys had a ball catching a 50 pound Roosterfish and 12 Sails.
Mike and Gloria Hahn came south to fish aboard the Miss Island Star. They had a blast fighting Sails, 4 Wahoo, an Amberjack, 2 Roosterfish, 2 Dorado plus 4 Cubera Snapper. Mike also managed to do some surfing when he found the time. Happy Birthday Mike.
William Herzog celebrated his 75th Birthday here at Tropic Star with Carole his wife, Karen his daughter, Stephanie his grandaughter, and Hank his grandson. They had a fantastic time aboard the Miss Tropic Star with Captain Alberto. They had a close encounter with a small Humpback whale. They have thirty minutes of footage where the whale is right next to the boat spinning and slapping the water with his peck fins. The parents thought the whale was pretty cool for the kids to see up close. When they were not whale watching, they were busy taking Sails off their hooks. They released 21 Sails and landed 6 Wahoo, 9 Tuna, 1 Roosterfish, 3 Snapper and a Dorado. Mr. Herzog said, “Everything was fantastic!” What a way to celebrate your Birthday!
Last but not least, Mr. Stephen Hapy flew south from Washington to fish the legendary waters of Panama. He released a Black Marlin and 5 Pacific Sails. He seemed to have as much fun as anybody while shopping for souvenirs from the native Indians.
Tight Lines,
Christopher Dinwiddie
