July 22 - 29
Things are changing here in the Darien. The rains have stopped and the water is alive with porpoise, bait, Tuna and Dorado. That is offshore. There is a trash line out there collecting more bait and life as I type this.
Inshore was productive as well. We have seen anglers release Tarpon the last two weeks. This is a rare thing, they are slipping through the locks of the panama canal. We welcome these fish, because they are very strong and they jump. It is nice to have a wildcard fish out there. Not too many people can say that they caught a Pacific Tarpon in their angling careers.
The Roosters are still here in numbers. There were a couple monsters released. The largest was in the 80lb range. The Wahoo are starting to show. One boat put the brakes on a 70lb. They were really fortunate to have a small circle hook find its mark without wire leader.

Greg Archer and his son Colton came south from Oklahoma to show everyone how it is done. These guys fished aboard Miss Spain and slammed the fish with Captain Maso. Colton caught a Grand Slam for the week. The fish were all his firsts. He released his first Black Marlin, his first Blue Marlin and his first Pacific Sailfish. These guys caught some nice Dorado and a really nice Wahoo. They mixed it up a bit fighting a few stout Tuna. Overall, these two had a great time experiencing everything that Tropic Star has to offer.
Bob Schultz and his son Stephen came down to fish with Capt. Gustavo aboard Miss England. Last July Stephen was the angler who had a close encounter with a large Black Marlin. He was back to get some sweet revenge, but not this time around. They had a good time releasing numerous Sails and catching a few tuna for apps.
Dr. Peter Kim brought his family of five down from Vancouver to have some fun. They caught and released several nice Sails on light spinning gear, they hit the Roosters hard as well. The Kims fished with Capt. Jose aboard Miss Canada. Dr. Peter Kim caught his first Tuna and his first Roosterfish. They estimated both fish to weigh around 70 pounds. Jonathan Kim caught some firsts as well. His first Dorado and his first Tuna were scratched off his list of things to do. Natasha Kim caught her first Roosterfish, her first Dorado and her first Tuna. The youngest Kim is Vanessa. Vanessa is a petit lady with big fish to her credit. She boated a 45lb Dorado and she added a few more fish to her quiver. She released a nice Roosterfish, caught a Tuna and a strong Cubera Snapper.
Albert Wolfe IV released his first Pacific Sail and his first Roosterfish. Albert also caught a big Amberjack. His son, Albert V caught a really long needle fish and released a nice Rooster. He caught a 37lb Dorada and a nice Cubera Snapper. He also managed to hang on long enough to win the battle with a Yellowfin Tuna.
Karen Wolfe was in the mix with her first Pacific Sailfish.
Joe Manning brought a big group from Texas to fish for whatever was biting. Paul and Elizabeth Hargrave released their first Pacific Sails aboard Miss Darien. They were fishing with Capt. Walter. This guy was really aggressive they said. “He was constantly hunting for the next fish. Walter is a younger captain with great vision." Keep an eye on this guy. These two also caught their first Tuna as well.
Diane and Bob O’Neil caught some huge Roosterfish and some great Wahoo. They also caught some nice Amberjacks and a couple of nice Snapper.
Robert and Jan Hargrave managed to get into the Tuna, the Roosters and the Cubera as well as the Wahoo. They also caught some nice Amberjacks and Robert caught the Pacific Tarpon.
Dee Stephens was a trooper and it payed off. She caught her first Dorado and her first Amberjack. Ted Stephens caught his first Dorado and his first Tuna. They both happened upon their first Wahoo.
Wesley Ward hammered a 120lb Yellowfin Tuna. He also caught a 70lb Roosterfish. Molly Ward caught her first Pacific Sailfish and a 71lb Roosterfish.
Harry Reese released a nice Roosterfish, which was his first.
Doug Reese released his first Pacific Sail, Amberjack and a nice Roosterfish.
Kendall Archer released his first Sail and caught his first Dorado. Kendall also managed to catch his first Amberjack as well.
Charlie Foreman brought a group of seasoned anglers. These guys had a Blue Marlin in the spread for a brief moment, but were eluded. They took a waiter fishing with them their last day out. Turns out, Achylis caught his first sail and his first tuna. These guys had a blast fishing with Capt. Alberto aboard Miss Tropic Star.
That is the word on the street in Pinas,
