Hennie & Ursula Marais manage to keep you in fish stories. |
July 23- 28
This was another eventful week at Tropic Star. The big Yellowfin Tuna were very cooperative, as were the Sailfish. The Marlin played hard to get, although several boats managed to find a few.
As always there were several reef fish that were happy to be released after a quick photo. I am referring to the big Roosterfish and Snapper. Dorado and Wahoo were thrown into the mix to keep the appetizers coming.
The Action:
Brett Tarpley and his daughter Laura both caught their first Pacific Sailfish. Chris Whatley came all the way from Indonesia with his son Colin. Colin managed to land a Sailfish and a Roosterfish that was bigger than he was. One night while fishing for bait, Laura landed a bonefish on a sabiki. That has to be a Tropic Star first!
Father and son, Jeff and Will Clarke made their third appearance at Tropic Star and I guess the third time is the charm. Both managed to catch their first Black Marlin with Captain Walter.
Both Marlin ate live baits and the guys were thrilled because they happened on back to back days. These guys were not messing around. They came back to the dock with three huge Tuna that definitely turned heads on the dock. They also managed to release 18 Sailfish to live to fight another day.
The happy McIntosh couple came to Tropic Star to catch some fish and that is exactly what they did. The first day out these two came back with a 110lb and a 211lb Yellowfin Tuna, plus four white flags on their outrigger. That translates to four Pacific Sails. Roberta was fired up, but it gets better. The next day they landed four more sails while fishing live bait for Marlin. Captain Gustavo told them the fourth day that they would catch a Marlin. He was spot on! Roberta told me she was sore after fighting that Tuna. She told me over a frozen drink that she was not about to quit on that Marlin. Not be outdone, Earl managed to put the brakes on a huge Yellowfin. The fish was a brute and weighed in at 229lbs. These two happy folks released a dozen sails while all this action was taking place.
Paul Parker and his son Lee came to fish with their friends the McMichaels. Sarah McMichael and her father Robert had a blast releasing their first ever Pacific Sails. Lee Parker did the same. This crew caught 3 Tuna, 3 Roosterfish, 10 Sails and 3 Amberjack. One of those Amberjacks was a monster. It was boated by Lee.
Roger Brown and crew managed to land 18-Sails aboard the Miss Puerto Rico. These guys caught 4 Amberjack, 1 Snapper, a Scamp Grouper and a Roosterfish.
Mr. Afranio Faro and his friends Celso and Alan Ryfer flew into Pinas from Brazil. These guys are avid fishermen and had a blast here at Tropic Star. Afranio said that, “Everything was first class.” These guys managed to land 6 Pacific Sails and pounded on the reef fish. They released some massive Roosterfish and Snapper. They really had a blast and are coming back to fish in September. Looking forward to seeing you guys.
Miss Margot Vincent came to Tropic Star with the right attitude. She brought a couple of fly rods and put them to good use. She released 16 Sails and roughly a half dozen were on fly. She broke off a nice Black Marlin on fly and landed one on conventional tackle. She was all smiles and is one heck of an angler.
The Long family fished aboard the Tropic Star as well. They released 12 Sails and 2 Wahoo. The Marlin were not very cooperative for this crew. They hooked one Black but it broke off before it could be tagged.
Miss Costa Rica was fished hard by the Burgess guys. They hail from Alabama. They had a blast releasing 9 Pacific Sails. One Sail jumped 16 times. They caught 14 spectacular jumps on film. The Roosterfish were cooperative. They released 5. They made good groceries when they landed a 32lb cow Dorado. The Marlin eluded them this trip, but I have a feeling we will hear, “Roll Tide!” from one of the boats real soon.
Trent and Andrews Pfau fished with their friend Jesse Womack. These guys had a ball fishing for Tuna and Sails. Their biggest Tuna was 191lbs. This fish was caught by Trent. They released 10 Pacific Sails along the way. The Marlin bite was slow for this crew but they said, “The captain Jose and mate Arnulfol were exceptional.” This crew aboard Miss Canada bagged 6 Tuna in total and 7 Wahoo.
The “good doctor to be” Whit Davis left Tropic Star with a Grand Slam on his last day aboard Miss Tropic Star. He landed a Sail, A Blue Marlin and a Striped Marlin. Whit was the Dockmaster for the past ten months. He is headed to Medical School in the Virgin Islands. I bet it is hard to study with the North drop so close to school. Buenos Suenos.
Next week will be full of Tuna tales. Yesterday there was one potential Junior World Record and another Yellowfin close to 300lbs.
Tight Lines,
Christopher Dinwiddie
