July 2 - 9

We had a very exciting week here at the Tropic Star Lodge. Stephen Schultz of team Bubba had his first Black Marlin estimated to be 500 pounds on the line for 25 minutes before it suddenly turned. The fish jumped over the stern and took over the fighting chair and made a quick exit. Stephen got out of the way just in time and escaped with minimal injuries. He was very fortunate, considering it could have been a life-threatening situation. All of us at the Tropic Star wish him well.

We hosted new families, first-timers as well as some of our old friends. Many of the first-timers caught their first Black Marlin, Blue Marlin and/or Sailfish. It’s always a thrill to watch rookies catch their first!

The crews released 3 Black Marlin, 6 Blue Marlin and 93 Sailfish. The Dorado bite was hot this week too, several in the 30 to 40 pound range. In all, we had 10 different species hooked this week!

The Action:

Plane delays and bad weather in the states could not keep one fishing family from having a great vacation. Without luggage or hesitation, this family took a last minute flight to Guatemala. After a slight detour they caught a last minute flight to Pinas bay to fish aboard the Island Star. Vince Trebilcock hooked up with a Black Marlin, a Blue Marlin and a Sailfish all in the same day which earned him his first Grand Slam! Congratulations Vince! Candie caught her first Cubera Snapper. Their son Kolby caught his first Blue Marlin while little brother Jordan battled his first Yellowfin tuna. Way to go Captain Gavilan and crew. Not too shabby, Trebilcock’s.

Julie and Kelle Simon both caught their first Sailfish aboard the Tropic Star with Captain Alberto, their highlight was releasing eight Pacific Sails in one day.

There was a red hot tuna bite a few days after the Fourth of July. Tom Butz cashed in on a 168 pound Yellowfin on 50 pound stand up gear. The big Yellowfin were feeding below. The live baits did not last long. They parlayed the tuna trip with a mess of wahoo near the rocks. It is obvious why the cooks were happy with the Butz family.

Jesse Chary, James Lee Ford and Jim Ford took advantage of the same tuna bite. This crew landed three tuna all busting the 100 pound mark! Marc Chary and the boys landed their first Pacific Sails. Good work.

Jay Campana, Scott Lambeth and Mark Lewis cashed in on the tuna bite as well. They fished aboard the Miss Puetro rico and landed a 130 pound Yellowfin, several Sails and some Wahoo.

Tom Tucker caught his first Striped Marlin while fishing with his wife Lisa aboard the Darien. Good work.

Jeff “Duct Tape” Morrow released his first Black Marlin at over 400 pounds! If you were here for the poem “Ode to the Black Marlin” then you know Jeff loves this fishery.

Tom Weyburn and Don Headings both released their first Black Marlin with Capitan Libardo aboard the Costa Rica. Great job guys!

John Leir released his first Blue Marlin while fishing aboard the Scandia. The fish was estimated at 250 pounds and put on quite a show.

Javier Garcia and his son caught a perfect pair of Pacific Sails. Congratulations on your first Sails.

Nicole Stangl, Christine Stangl, and Uncle John Swaney all landed their first Sails. Father Mike Stangl managed to tame a picture perfect Blue Marlin. Mother Therse Stangl was fired up about her 40 pound Dorado!

These were just a few examples of the excitement we had at the Tropic Star Lodge last week. The staff is looking forward to seeing all of you real soon.

Tight lines!

Tom Juhl and Christopher Dinwiddie
