Hennie & Ursula Marais manage to keep you in fish stories. |
July 31 - Aug 6
This week was a great one! The guests were great and the fishing was spectacular. The Tuna really turned on and the Marlin bite was strong. There were plenty of smiles around the scales. Reason being, there were 5 Tuna swinging over 200lbs. We had sushi coming out of our ears. Nine lucky anglers caught their first Marlin. What about the Sails? Ten folks caught their first Sailfish. Once again the Dorado and Wahoo were around to make dinner special.
The Action:
The Eichner clan came to Pinas bay with a plan. They fished hard and had some fun with 9 Pacific Sails. It was brother Ian Bruce’s first Blue Marlin aboard the Miss Canada. Captain Jose estimated the Blue to weigh roughly 300lbs. Daughter Alexandra caught her first Pacific Sail. Overall, this crew caught 9 Sails and two beautiful Blues.
Steve Hunter and David Stewart came to Panama with fish on the brain. These guys are serious about blue water and they proved it. The first afternoon they wasted no time fishing the reef. They boated 3 AJ’s, a Cubera Snapper and a nice Mullet Snapper. The Miss South Africa was called to duty this week. She is our newest Bertram and she looks great. So far she is batting a thousand when fishing for Marlin. Captain Walter was at the helm. He managed to release a Black Marlin, a Sail and land 4 Tuna. Miss Scandia came back from the barn ready for action. The same Captain and crew loaded up for a great week. These guys landed a 253 Yellowfin Tuna and both guys caught their first Marlin. Steve Managed to land his first Sail as well. They fought their fish hard, so hard that they left a lasting mark on the fighting chair. Good work gentlemen.
The Spooners came to Tropic Star with a mission. This father and son team wanted to hammer fish for two weeks straight. They let 32 Sails go after a quick picture. Bob Spooner caught his first Blue Marlin. Capt. Gavilan said she was roughly 350. There was another Marlin released by this crew that same day. Bobby got a workout with a 450 Black that they caught on video. These guys were already happy. The best is yet to come. These two woke up each morning with smiling faces and a lot of coffee. One day they had no idea what was in store for them. The boat was riding a little lower than normal this afternoon. I expected a tail wrapped Marlin. Boy was I wrong. How about a 283lb monster tuna laying next to a 202lb Yellowfin. Later in the week, Bobby put a whuppin’ on a 400lb Black. There was another 180lb Tuna added to the tally the next day. Add 5 Roosterfish, 4 Snapper, 2 Dorado, 1 Wahoo and another Black Marlin. “Everything was Excellent!” Bobby Spooner. I have to agree. These guys left a mark here at Tropic Star. Pinas Poker is the newest and hottest card game thanks to the Spooners.
Two young couples were in the mix and were not to be denied their Marlin guarantee. The Crippens and Smith/White team fished aboard Miss Costa Rica. Captain Libardo was at the helm sniffing out the billfish. Mate Donar was in the pit helping the crew battle fish. This was a perfect trip for these four Floridians. This boat had three Marlin firsts and three firsts for Sails. Scott Crippen did battle with his biggest tuna ever. He cashed in on a 260lb fish. Charli had different fish crash a live bait just in front of a pod of porpoise. Her fish weighed in at 253lbs. Leslie caught her first Blue Marlin. It was roughly 230lbs. Both Trey Smith and Charli White managed to release a Black Marlin. Altogether this crew released 17 Sails, and 4 Dorado. After reading this you can understand why Charli said she was, “Impressed by the captain and mate. They were so professional, which made our trip so enjoyable.” Thanks for the kind words. We look forward to seeing you next year.
The Kocum and Zeimetz party came to Pinas to fish with Captain Armando aboard Miss Puerto Rico. Both Franz and Kyle caught their first Pacific Sails. Mr. Tom Kocum released his first Blue Marlin and Pancho released a nice Black Marlin that same day. The Sail they released gave them a grand slam for the day. Overall, these four had a blast with a half dozen Sails and a Wahoo. The most memorable quote from this crew took place upon arrival. “Son, welcome to my Disney World!” Pancho Zeimetz.
Miss Australia was host to the Bronsteins and the Brocks. The father and son teams like to fish hard. The Marlin were not cooperative for this crew. They had two in the baits. One was hooked up for a bit but both swam away without a tag. They answered the radio chatter and landed a few Tuna. The biggest was a 127lb Yellowfin. Add 7 Large Pacific Sails, 3 Wahoo, a 40lb Cubera Snapper, 2 Roosterfish, 2 Amberjacks, an African Pompano and a nice Dorado. Ryan Brock was happy to catch his first Pacific Sailfish. These kids were all over the bait catching scene. Thanks guys for your enthusiasm and help. I almost forgot. They caught a nice tripletail to add to the mix.
Jean Gaskill and Stanely Chassin flew south to fish for Marlin aboard Miss Panama. Captain Dagoberto took their words to heart. He was covered up in Marlin. They had five shots at Blues and released a 400-pounder. That fish was Stanely Chassin’s first Blue Marlin. Jean Gaskill ended up tagging a 250lb Striped Marlin. The total Sailfish tally was seven. Pretty work. When this crew left another filled their shoes.
Miss Panama had another crew that flew all the way from Amsterdam to fish these fish infested waters. The crew was happy to land their first Pacific Sail, but they did not get the Marlin they were looking for. They fished hard for three days and raised only one Blue. They did manage to get up close and personal with a huge bull Dorado. Their total was 6 Pacific Sails. Better Luck next time to Mr. C.B. De Koning and Mr. Dirk Schonenberg. Thanks for everything.
Miss Alaska was hot for Wahoo. They landed 6 screaming Wahoo. The crew was made up of Panamanians Moises Emiliani and son Monchi, plus friend Diego. Diego caught his first Sail while the rest of the guys released 4-Sails and 5-Tuna.
Miss Tropic Star was able to make blue water dreams a reality. They came true for the Cilliers and the Tapps. This kind of crew makes our job really easy. I really enjoy seeing kid’s faces when they truly hit one out of the park. That is exactly what Chris Cilliers did. He landed a huge Blue Marlin and a 235lb Tuna. He made short work of the tuna. It only took him 28 minutes to get it to the gaff. Did I mention that Chris is ten years old? This fish would have smashed the current small fry world record of 167 pounds, but the IGFA rules were broken accidentally. Clyde Tapp caught his first Blue Marlin with Captain Alberto at the helm. Alexi was the mate and received rave reviews. Several Amberjack found their way into the fish box and so did a nice Snapper. A nice Roosterfish made for good pictures and so did a 52-pound Dorado. If that was not enough, Chris managed to put one more feather in his cap before the trip was over. He put the “Hurt” on his second Blue Marlin. This kid was so hot that he was awarded a “Tropic Star Big Stick” fish bat. What a week for the crew from the Virgin Islands! The dads were having more fun watching the kids do all the work. This was perfect for the younger fishermen. They couldn’t get enough. They could not sleep because they were so fired up about the monster fish. So, we had them on bait duty well into the night. Thanks for your help guys.
Tight Lines,
Christopher Dinwiddie
