July 8 - 15
This was a great week to visit Tropic Star. We saw a strong showing offshore. The marlin were hungry on and off the reef. There were 8 anglers who caught their first Black Marlin. Two others caught their first Pacific Blue Marlin. Joy Tweedle released the biggest fish this week. Her Black Marlin was estimated to weigh 600lbs. Quite a fish, especially if you saw Joy. She is 16 years old and might weigh 100lbs fully dressed and soaking wet.
We saw some serious rains this week. The rains did not put a damper on the fishing...
Black Marlin 7
Blue Marlin 2
Striped Marlin 0
Sailfish 52
Tuna 63
Dorado 25
Amberjack 8
Rooster Fish 1
Snapper 12
The kids had a lot of fun fighting the tuna this week. There were some very happy faces on our young anglers when they saw that their fish weighed more than they did.
Carroll Hutchens caught his first Black Marlin with Capt. Gustavo. They took a good look and Gustavo estimated the fish to be i n the neighborhood of 500lbs. He was about to jump out of his skin he was so fired up. This guy is a serious angler from Oklahoma. He brought along some family and friends to experience perfection aboard Miss England. Joanne was beat after battling a 60lb Yellowfin. Thanks Joanne, the sushi was great.
This crew caught some 65lb Dorado and some good eating 60lb Yellowfin Tuna. The whole crew caught their first Pacific Sailfish. Raqule was the angler boasting the big Dorado and Dr. Burton was all over his 60lb Yellowfin.
Eric Schmitz caught his first Blue Marlin with Gustavo’s brother Gavilan at the wheel.
That Blue ran hard and fought like a bear. She was approx 300lbs according to Gavilan.
Gary and Mareen Sandor brought the grand kids down to do some blue water fishing. They had a riot with Walter aboard the Miss Darien. The 3 grandchildren, Natalie, Maura and Gregory each caught their first Pacific Sailfish. These 3 also caught some nice Yellowfin. They weighed 120, 110 and 90 accordingly. Gregory had an outstanding catch with a nice 45lb Cubera Snapper they yanked off the reef. The ladies follwed right behind with some smaller Mullet Snapper. My Grandparents were cool, but these two were impressive.
Trell Messenger and Kevin Knox got to make fun of Ben wilke cause they both caught their first Black Marlin. Kevin’s was a little bigger. They said both fish put on a show. One was on the reef and the other was a ways offshore. They both ate live bait and gave these two something to talk about. All three of these guys caught their first Pacific Sailfish.
Matthew Cook was jacked up about his 400lb Black Marlin that he released with Captain Candelo. The Cook family was here to fish Panama. They did a great job covering all the bases. April and Patrick released their first Pacific Sails. Matthew and Patrick each caught some nice Tuna, they tipped the scales at 70 and 60lbs each.
They reported bait balls and tuna feeding for acres. Quite a show for this crew. They loved it. They said they could have caught Tuna for hours, but instead went looking for a billfish to release. You can’t buy class.
Richie Gelb released his first Black Marlin while fishing with his father Larry. The Black weighed approx 300lbs. These two released several sails as well.
Joy and Mary Tweddle both released their first Pacific Sails. Mary managed to release a 48lb roosterfish and Joy brought in a nice tuna. Joy was the Angler mentioned earlier that released a huge Black Marlin. This all happened with Alberto at the wheel.
Raul Pinero released his first Black Marlin. These guys were fishing with Flaco aboard Miss Alaska.
The Smartt family came down from Idaho. These guys had a blast releasing two nice Marlin. Charles released a 350lb and David released a 450lb. Geoffrey and the others each caught their first Pacific Sailfish and Geoffrey topped it all off with a 32lb Cubera snapper.
There was a pair of private boats fishing this week. The Sorry Dear reported excellent marlin fishing. They released 8 Marlin for the week. These guys were not messing around. They released sails on Monday, fought Tuna on Tuesday, released an 800lb Black and a 450lb Black on Wednesday. They lost a 400+Blue later that day.
Thursday they went 2 for 2 on big Blues and caught a nice Yellowfin Tuna.
The other private boat was Sorcha. She caught a 430lb Black Marlin the other day while live baiting on the reef. Not bad for the first morning out.
That wraps things up, I want to leave you with a mental image of the tuna crashing the bait offshore. Imagine three or four baitfish laying on top of a log trying to get out of the water. Self preservation at it’s finest. Now, imagine 3 or 4 layers of baitfish on top of that same log. It was incredible to see. A few lucky souls have some of that action on video. What a scene!
Tightlines,
