June 17 - 24
One of the best parts of our jobs here at Tropic Star Lodge is that we get to meet the most wonderful people. This week we had the pleasure of meeting the very famous Uncle Vic and his Bertrams 31 Club. Uncle Vic hosted his annual Invitational Tournament here at the lodge. Sad to say their previous tournaments were held in Louisiana but after Katrina they had to look for an alternative venue, thus Tropic Star. Needless to say they had such a good time that Uncle Vic has rebooked their tournament here next year.
Between Uncle Vic’s group, the Bertram group, the Lourdin family and our dear friends Yvonne and Rick Buckley we released 238 sailfish, 1 Black Marlin, 1 Blue Marlin and 2 Striped marlin! The Tuna showed up in numbers and the top Yellowfin weighed in at 190 pounds. The Roosterfish are still thick and we released a good number of Roosterfish over sixty pounders.
The Action:
Rick and Yvonne Buckley who target mainly Marlin had no Marlin luck this week but did release 13 Sailfish. Yvonne had some time to fish inshore for Roosterfish of 40 lb plus. Yvonne is on her quest to release her 50th marlin on stand up, a lady angler to be admired!
Bertram group from Bertram USA joined us later in the week with anglers Joe Bradley Bubenzer, George Jousema, George Sass, James Jones, Louis Sola from Bertram, Panama and our second hero for the week (after Uncle Vic of course) Anthony Sola. They fished the Miss Alaska, the Island Star and the Spain.
For the Bertram USA Group A, the First Blue Marlin Award went to Anthony Sola, who is only 8 years old! Anthony is a true fisherman in the making, all his fish would grow a few pounds by the hour...what an angler though, he was privileged to be given the honor of co-winning with Uncle Vic!
First Sailfish Certificates were give to: Michael Goebel, James Jones, George Sass, Bradley Bubenzer, George Jousema and Anthony Sola.
The 190 pound Tuna was caught by Anthony Sola too!
When the Uncle Vic arrived and we sorted out the angler rotations I asked him what the rules were and if he’d like me to keep track of scores. His response was, "No I make the rules as we go and Uncle Vic always Wins!"
This really was a good group and it will be hard to find people more in love with a 31 Bertram than these guys and with our fleet of 15 31' Bertram’s they hit the spot. Apparently coming round the point on their day of some of these lovers became rather sentimental to see the bay with all our Bertrams at anchor waiting to set out for their next fishing day.
For Uncle Vic’s anglers we gave First Sailfish Release Awards to Walter Kaprielian, Bill De La Graza, Don Helms, Timothy Kisieleski, Robert McReynolds, Ed Coller, Micheal Ohlstein, Chris Frank and Randall Rosenthal.
Darryl Pennington and Chris Guerin left their boat the Mary P in the States and fished the Miss Costa Rica, they released 10 Sails while spending their days in search of the big ones. We look forward to seeing the new Mary P in our waters soon.
Yves Lourdin brought his sons and their friend Kristian Kwiecinski for a short 2 day trip. They fished the Miss Spain and the Alaska. Yves Junior released his first Marlin while the other boys each got their first Pacific Sailfish.
Weather:
Exceptional big swells from a storm 2000 miles away hammered the Panama coast. We had rain in the afternoons and evenings which is typical for this time of the year.
Randall Rosenthal took some time off fishing to surf with the staff and had an amazing time.
Good to be writing these again...
Hennie and Ursula Marais
