June 19-26, 2004
Great to see some old friends again, Dr. John Waldrop and his wife Lady Laurie joined us for a week of great fishing! John caught his first black, striped marlin and a sail on fly, all in one week. He also completed a billfish Grand Slam for the week. John caught a 350-pound black marlin his first day out! Believe it or not, it was part of a double-header with a sailfish. While John fought his black from the chair, the mate fought the sailfish from the bow. The very next day Laurie released her 180-pound striped marlin before 9:00 am. John brought in their 2nd striper pushing 200-pounds before noon. They also nailed 2-dorado and headed inshore for the rocks to complete their 2's thing with 2-roosterfish and 2-Cubera snapper. Dr. Waldrop was seen heading for a massage at the end of that day. By the way, John is booked for next year! You guessed it, 2-trips. They wound up with 25-sailfish and a 90-pound yellowfin tuna to round out their trip. John & Laurie were our only guests fishing the early part of the week. We were enjoying our annual company party. Our TSL staff from Orlando and Panama City were there to enjoy the magic of Pinas Bay. The last time I saw our office manager Bonnie Karp, she was having a black marlin tattooed on her arm - don't worry, it came off in a week.
Captain Zane (all of 10-years old) Andrews was at the helm when the right-rigger went off. He jumped down from the bridge, grabbed the rod and dropped the live-bonito back to an unknown fish. He did this all by himself, all according to IGFA rules! Uncle Raleigh (Werking) was there to witness and coach Zane through his first black marlin battle. It lasted a total of 3-hours; unfortunately the fish came up dead. It was strange, because the circle-hook was placed right in the corner of the mouth, right where it's supposed to be. The fish weighed in at 321-pounds. While it's a rare occurrence to see a marlin on the scale at TSL, this one didn't go to waste.
Jessie & Stefanie Lillard landed a monster Cubera snapper while fishing with their friend Zane. Jessie also got his first sailfish with Zane at the helm. He's already booked for next year - his homework does come first!
Our film crew even got to get out to fish half day. Richard Brown and Raleigh Werking each caught 2 sailfish and were back by noon. Its Richard's magic that you've seen behind the camera in the TSL video and designing the TSL Brochure and Newsletter.
Julian Kisner released his first sail, as did Aaron Kisner.
The Russell family fished two boats and Megan Russell released her first Pacific sailfish.
Benjamin Hardin released his first black marlin and Mary Hardin her first sailfish.
Wilson Cox let his friend, Ken Baldwin catch all the fish, including his first ever billfish. Ken picked it right up, releasing a black marlin and a sailfish.
Richard and Hayden Ballard released their first Pacific sailfish, so did Thomas Armstrong.
The O'Day's visited and Connie released her first black and striped marlin and Michael his first striped marlin.
Tight Lines,
Hennie
