Hennie & Ursula Marais manage to keep you in fish stories. |
June 31 - July 7
It is good to be back in the Tropics. The fishing was good this week. We saw some hot action on the reef and off the reef. The whales are here and so are the Tuna. There were some nice Tuna caught this week, several in the 100 pound category.
Miss Tropic Star released 3 Black Marlin in one day with the Brantleys aboard. Two of those fish fell for live bait and the third was fooled with the old bait and switch.
When will they learn? Hopefully never!
Saturday the 8th, there were 2 Blacks released by Miss Costa Rica.
This was an eventful week here at Tropic Star.
We saw one guest complete a Royal Slam!
We saw another climb a couple of steps closer to that same goal. There were also two potential World Records caught.
We spent a few hours experimenting, trying to catch a day time swordfish, no luck there, but it could pay off one day. We had a nibble, not sure what it was.
The water is blue and the bait has been easy. The majority of the bait consists of bonito and small yellofin. There are a few rainbow runners in there as well. Snapper and Amberjack are schooling deep on the reef.
Things look good around here. I am expecting to see some Wahoo in the near future along with some monster Tuna and more Blue Marlin flags.
The Roosters are still patrolling the rocks. Nice Cuberas are still tearing up the live goggle eyes. Add in a couple nice Dorado to make the fish plates even better.
The Arnolds aboard the Scandia had some really strong action with Captain Chito:
Black Marlin 8
Blue Marlin 1
Sails 110
Tuna 42
Dorado 9
AJ 29
Roosters 32
Snapper 34
Carlton Savory and Jake Gudger came to fish with Dr. Waldrop. They both released their first Roosterfish and Jake released his first Black Marlin and Pacific Sail.
Katie Miller released her first Amberjack. This fish went 44 pounds on the scale.
Dr. Javier Garcia brought the whole family to see what this place had to offer. Dr. Javier caught and released his first Roosterfish. She weighed 65 pounds.
His son Frederico caught a 25 pound Jack.
Javi Garcia released his first Sail and his first Roosterfish.
Mary Garcia released her first Sail and a nice 40 pound Rooster as well.
Austin Shumacker released a Pacific Sail and his first Roosterfish. The Rooster was 50 pounds.
Courtney Cherry caught a 50 pound Cubera and released a 30 pound rooster as well as her first Pacific Sail.
Kitty Clifford caught a 51 pound Cubera.
Dr. Warren Brantley and his son Jeb, both caught their first Black Marlin.
That marlin completed the Royal Slam for the good Doctor. Congrats!
Jeb managed to tackle a 56 pound Dorado, his best to date.
Jeb also released another Black Marlin with they estimated around 550-Pounds.
Jeb is a few species away from the same slam his father just completed.
Gerald Russell released a nice 275 pound Blue Marlin.
Mary Ann Russell released her first Pacific Sailfish.
Dr. Patrick Arnold released his first Pacific Blue Marlin. She was around 250 pounds.
Dr. Dan Arnold released his first Sail, Tuna and Roosterfish.
Buck Arnold was on fire. He got to go surfing and he released his first Pacific Sail, his first Rooster, which was roughly 50 pounds. He also released a nice mullet snapper and his first Pacific Rainbow Runner.
Trey Ruschhaupt and Ronnie Mostyn both released their first Black Marlin. Estelle Mostyn released her first Pacific Sail.
Daniel Kopesky and Martin Henkhaus both released their first Sail, caught their first Tuna and released their first Roosterfish. Daniel caught a 29 pound Dorado as well.
Christopher Scialdone and his sister Laura came south with their parents. They came all the way form Mississippi to set some potential World Records. Laura caught a 27.5 pound Mullet Snapper which is a pending Junior Angler World Record. Brother Christopher caught a 11.2 pound Mullet Snapper that is a pending Small Fry world Record.
These two young anglers caught their first Sails and their first Tuna as well as their first Cubera Snapper. They caught almost every inshore species that we have here. Congrats guys.
Their mother, Julie Scialdone released her first Pacific Sail.
The Rose family came down from Dallas to catch some fish. They did really well with the Tuna and had some fun with the Sailfish. Mark Rose caught a Tarpon, one that must have slipped through the locks.
Peggy Rose caught a 50-Pound Cubera Snapper and a 110-Pound Yellowfin Tuna.
Lauren and Julie Rose both caught their first Pacific Sailfish and their first Roosterfish.
Julie caught a 127 pound Tuna to top things off.
