June 5 - 10

Red-hot marlin action. Wednesday June 8, 2005, 4 individual anglers each released a billfish grand slam, (blue marlin, black marlin and sailfish) Joey Fisher, Sam Pollock, Peter Makrocki, Nelson Perez and a staff member, Luis Lamastos who released a striped marlin, blue marlin and sailfish.

Wednesday ended with 24 marlin released, 17 blue marlin, 5 black marlin, 2 striped marlin and 50 sailfish. The biggest highlight of the day and probably the year goes to Sam Pollock on the Miss Spain with Captain Maso. They made headlines and more than likely broke the LODGE RECORD when Sam released 5 blue marlin, 1 black marlin and 4 sailfish in one day!

Oh, and did we mention that this week Nelson Perez brought his friends and held his yearly Tampa International Billfish Tournament.

The action:

Gene and Judy Schlichtman fished the Miss Island Star they released 7 sailfish and 2 blue marlin, this was a first blue marlin for Gene.

Fishing the Miss Alaska were Stanley Williams and Kimball Weatheringtonwho had a ball releasing 1 blue marlin and 15 sailfish, they also had a lot of fun fishing inshore and releasing 5 roosterfish.

Miss Puerto Rico had a hard time, releasing only black marlin and 15 sailfish with anglers Larry Gilmore, his son Ryan and wife Maryann.

Miss Spain started off slowly but had it all with their 6 marlin in one day on Wednesday, 5 blue marlin, 1 black marlin and 5 sailfish on Wednesday for anglers Sam and Joan Pollock. Sam released a striped marlin on Friday ending up with a grand slam and a super grand slam for the week. Sam had never released a marlin before – congratulations Sam!

The Miss Scandia with anglers, Bill and Bob Gargiulo released 1 black, 3 blues, 3 striped marlins and 17 sailfish. First blue marlin for Bill, first black marlin and sailfish for Bob. They also released 9 roosterfish.

Fishing the Costa Rica anglers Gary Frashier his son Brian and daughter Kathy Peardot, released 2 blacks, 1 blue marlin and 12 sailfish. A marlin for each member of the family. Kathy released her first blue marlin and sailfish. Brian his first Sailfish and black marlin, Gary his first black marlin.

The Miss England released 1 striped marlin and 18 sailfish with anglers, Don and Carol Coggen and Tom Van Der Molen. Don released his first striped marlin. The Miss Canada releases 1 blue, 1 black marlin and 20 sailfish with anglers Mark Serbinski, Kristine Serbinski and Peter Makrocki. Peter released his first blue, black marlin and sailfish, a grand slam on Wednesday. Kristine released her first sailfish. Mark his first sailfish.

The Miss Australia with Captain Candelo and anglers Nelson Perez and Jim Doerson found the fish on Tuesday, 25 Miles offshore, they released 27 sailfish and 1 black marlin on Tuesday. Anglers Nelson Perez and Jim Doerson released 1 black, 3 blue, 1 striped marlin and 48 sailfish. Jennifer Puhl visited the lodge for her first time with her dad Jerry and released her first blue and striped marlin on the Miss Panama. Jerry released a black marlin and between them they released 16 sailfish for the week.

The Miss Tropic Star released 2 blues, 2 blacks and 6 sailfish with anglers Joe and Joey Fisher. First blue marlin for both Joe and Joey on Wednesday. Joe also caught his first black marlin and ended the week with a grand slam. Tom and Kelly Fisher brought Captain Teodoro out of retirement and released 2 blues, 1 black and 16 sailfish. This was the first blue marlin for both Tom and Kelly.

TAMPA INTERNATIONAL BILLFISH TOURNAMENT 2005

MENS DIVISION:

First place angler:
Nelson Perez with 5227.3 points (Even though some anglers released more marlin than Nelson, he fished light tackle which earned him bonus points).

Second place angler: Sam Pollock with 5100 points.

Third place angler: Jim Doerson with 3679.6 points.

LADIES DIVISION:
First place: Jennifer Puhl with 2348 points
Second place: Kelly Fisher with 2130 points
Third place: Kathy Peardot with 1000 points

Largest tuna: Tom Van Der Molen – 219.5 lbs
Largest roosterfish: Kimball Weatherington – 65lbs
Largest dorado: Joe Fisher – 55lbs

Some good size Tuna were caught this week:
Bill Gargiulo – 131.6 lbs
Nelson Perez – 128.3 lbs
Gene Schlichtman – 158 lbs
Mark Serbinski – 132 lbs
