June 9- June 16
It was once again our pleasure to host the “Little One 2007 Tournament". Many of our angler’s wives accompanied them which filled the lodge up to capacity.
With the sailfish bite still being so hot they were in for a very exciting tournament. All the fish had to be hooked by the angler’s and to make things a little trickier, it was all on 20lb line. And then just as you got used to your boat, they change you out for the next day.
Robert Ford and Terry Dietrich were the 2 to follow on the first day of the competition as they had a outstanding catch of 16 Sailfish while fishing on the Puerto Rico . Chasing second place was Bill Lawhorn and Barry Fitzpatrick on the South Africa with 10 Sailfish. Craig Lednum and Chuck DiNapoli came in a close third for the day with 9 Sailfish.
Tuesday was once again a rest day and some of the anglers took the opportunity to relax while others went out to further hone their skills. Many of the angler’s fared better on their off day with catches of up to 20 Sailfish and a average of around 12 for the fleet. Pat Carnes and Vicki Rhodes both caught their first Pacific Sailfish.
Wednesday brought the competition back into action and all the competitiveness was brought out. The bite was a little slower but never the less the angler’s still impressed with Chuck DiNappoli and John Freitag having an exciting day aboard the Australia catching 8 Sailfish.Robert Ford and Barry Fitzpatrick taking second place with 6 Sailfish. There was a 3 way tie for third place between Leroy Buckler and Ronald Dulin on the Canada, Francis Carnes and Tom Moore on the Darien, Warren Merrill and Craig Lednum on the Spain- all with 5 Sailfish for the day. While they might not have been in the top 3, Terry Dietrich and David Butcher had just a great a day with 4 Sailfish and 1 Blue Marlin.
Thursday was once again a fun day and fun it was with the boats returning with some outstanding catches which included 2 Blue Marlin. Libby Thomas had a big surprise install for her when she caught and released a giant Tarpon of about 150lbs.
With the dawn of the last day the excitement was still there and all the ladies were there as usual to wish their husbands luck as they left the dock. And as on all the other days the ladies were there when they got back in the afternoon.
With the bite heating up it was a duel to the end with David Butcher and Pat Gerald on the Canada, tying for first place for the day with Terry Dietrich and Doug Daniels on the Darien. Both boats returning with 13 Sailfish releases. Second place won by Barry Fitzpatrick and Tom Moore and third by Mike Thomas and Jim Burtle. Young Justin Lednum who accompanied his father and was not part of the competition had a dream day catching 8 Sailfish.
The final results for the competition are as follows:
The Atlantic Coast Team of Lee Buckler of Madison, Maryland, Terry Detrich of Trappe, Maryland, Chuck DiNapoli of Easton, Maryland, and Barry Fitzpatrick of Rockville, Maryland finished as the first place team in the "Little One" competition with 51 sailfish. This is the 7th first place finish for the Atlantic Coast Team in the last 10 years.
The West Coast team of Warren Merrill, Bob Ford, Ron Dulin and Mike Thomas all of Huntington Beach, California, finished in second place with 43 sailfish.
The Gulf Coast Team of Bill Lawhorn, Ron Grad and Tom Moorer all of of Dallas, Texas, and Pat Gerald of Sulphur Springs, Texas, finished in third place with 42 sailfish.
The traditional "pat on the back" accorded the individual participant with the most points at week's end went to Bob Ford of Huntington Brach, California, with 19 sailfish during the 3 day competition, a blue marlin on one of the "fun days," and a really great pilot whale story.
Well done to all of the angler’s and we look forward to your return.
