Hennie & Ursula Marais manage to keep you in fish stories. |
March 25 - 31
This week had some great moments. There were 8 Marlin
tagged. The big Roosterfish are here! The reef
fishing has been good to those who fished the rocks
and reef. Several Rooster Fish were over 70 pounds. An
80 pound Grouper hit the dock this week as well.
Offshore the water is warming and the conditions are
improving. We are on the cusp of change here, for the
better. As the bait shows up, the fish will follow.
Private boats have reported loads of tuna further
offshore. The majority of the Marlin were tagged on
the ledge, roughly 14 miles from the dock.
The best fish tale of the week was aboard Miss Alaska.
Dana, Trey, Flynn and R.M. Ashley had a slow start,
but things sped up later in the week when they had a
close encounter with a big Black Marlin. The fish was
super hot. She tore across the surface for over a
hundred yards while greyhounding. Several jumps later
she was headed back at the boat. In the mean time,
something went wrong with the Starboard engine. She
would not shift. The big fish is approaching. Captain
Flaco reverses to let the fish have the right of way.
The fish turns more towards the boat. Flaco put his
port engine in reverse to keep the fish out of the
cockpit. The fish landed on the bow of the boat. She
then flopped off in an instant. The crew were in shock
and so was the fish. Dana ran to the bow after the
fish fell back into the water. He freed the line that
was hung up on the bow. The fish was a bit stunned as
well. After several minutes of reviving the Black
Marlin, she swam away.
They managed to get the motor to shift after a few
minutes with a "mechanic on duty".
An hour later the same crew had another Black Marlin
dancing for them. She was a bit smaller than the
first, but a sight for sore eyes. These guys were in
the right place at the right time, because they had a
huge Marlin swim under their boat while they were
playing their second fish.
Flynn "War Eagle" Morris released his first Black
Marlin ever. Robert Michael Ashby II released his
first Black Marlin as well. Trey released his first
Pacific Sail and Dana should get an honorable mention
for the Marlin on the bow of the boat craziness. Dana
snatched a 40 pound Cubera out of the rocks as well.
He also did some MacGuyver stuff under the engine
hatch. Great work Dana.
Jan Krix caught her first Black Marlin aboard Miss
Panama with Captain Dagoberto. Her angling husband
John Bazos was the man with an 80 pound Broomtail
Grouper. They had a blast and we all enjoyed eating
fresh grouper!
Hans and Laura Jensen had a pair of first Sails with
Candelo as their Captain aboard Miss Australia. The
best fish of their week must have been the 75 pound
Roosterfish that they took a quick photo of and released.
Pete and Stacy Jenson came down and tore it up. They
fished with Captain Libardo aboard Miss Costa Rica.
They both tagged their first Black Marlin and caught
some really nice Rooster Fish as well.
Richard Wasser caught his first Pacific Sail and Terry
caught a Striped Marlin that was tagged and estimated
to weigh around 200 pounds.
Scott Tankersley released his first Sail and so did
Allen Potts and Marshall Moore. Joe Tucker Jr.
released a nice Black Marlin. The fish crashed the
bait within a minute of being set out. Marshall
caught a great snap shot of this fish in mid air just
as the mate got his first wraps on the leader. That is
the shot we are all looking for. Joe released his
first Pacific Sail as well. Ted Van Beuren released
his first Black Marlin.
Adios for now,
Christopher Dinwiddie
