The waters of Pinas Bay seem to produce a fishing “phenomenon” yearly - sometimes its snapper boils or 60lb dorado in schools, 1,000 plus sailfish per week releases, one year 60 marlin in one week released. This year, I'd say a very large number have caught 100lb and 200lb yellowfin tuna during our fishing “extraordinaire.” Other little phenomenon's keep appearing though. This past week after some very slow weeks of fishing, I heard that some sailfish were spotted 20 miles north of the resort, with most of our fleet fishing 20 miles south I headed out with Whit on the Miss USA to see if there was merit to the rumor and looking for action. The Costa Rica joined us. We found a pod of sailfish 15 miles north of the resort and in no time the Costa Rica released 8 sails. Whit fought a sailfish on fly rod for two and half hours. Needless to say that on Wednesday the fleet all ran north. They released 280 sailfish in one day! All released on circle hooks. Phew, what a phenomenon! Especially when they were gone the next day!

The Action:

Arthur “Bubba” Burgess and Wes Hixon fished the Miss Canada, going for hero or zero they where looking for a black marlin trophy, getting only one strike for the 6 days but Wes felt that you go to do the time to get the big ones, next time guys. Bubba did get a nice 70lb roosterfish.

Art Scroggie and Jim Knight fished the Miss Costa Rica. 41 sailfish and 1 striped marlin released. They had a good time.

John Difederico, Mark Miller and George Green fished the Miss Spain, they released 31 sailfish and a black marlin, and these guys loved their crew. It sure is part of a great trip.

David Heschles, Allan Kratz, Victor Fisher fished the Miss Island Star. They released 29 sailfish. Victor and Allan each released their first sailfish.

Elias, Ricardo and Pedro Bentin from Peru fished the Miss England released 22 sailfish and one black marlin, it was Pedro’s first sailfish, well done.

The Otis Smith group revisited after 7 years and brought new friends, thanks for all the praise of our beautiful lodge, it's sure rewarding when clients enjoy the ammenities. Fishing the Miss Puerto Rico, Darien, Panama and Scandia they released 132 sailfish. Marilyn Hussey released her first sailfish. Mr. Otis and Ann Smith celebrated their 43rd wedding anniversary and how nice of Jimmy Buffett to give you a little performance and dedicate a song to you guys - congratulations!

John Wathen, Everett True, James Lamberson and St. Clair fished the Miss Alaska, they released 24 sailfish. John, Everett, James and St. Clair all released their first sailfish!

Jim Erwin brought his company employees and family and fished for 4 days. Dan McDonald, Eric Dych, Jim Erwin, James Branson, Jake Erwin, Lynn Shoop, Clint Norris and Mike Neal fished the Miss Australia and Tropic Star releasing 42 sailfish.

Jimmy Buffett and old friend Bobby Novey dropped in and fished 2 and a half days on the Miss Australia, Jimmy caught his first sailfish on fly rod and his first roosterfish estimated at 65lbs!

We hope Jimmy keeps TSL on his tour-schedule.

Tight Lines,
Hennie and Ursula Marais
