Hennie & Ursula Marais manage to keep you in fish stories. |
March 26 - April 2
This past week we were greeted with an early showing of sailfish close to shore. This was appreciated especially by Margot Vincent who was fishing on the Miss Tropic Star with Captain Alberto. She joined us again to try and break another record for sailfish on fly. She had a good week hooking sailfish each day, and finished the week releasing a total of 7 (all on fly), but none exceeded the weight needed for a 16 or 20 pound class tippet record. I know she will be back soon to try again.
Paul Nelson, Lawrence Vidrie, Kerwin Steffan and Ajey Varma arrived as well armed with fly rods and looking for sailfish. They were fishing on the Miss Spain and the Miss Panama this past week. They were able to find some sails and released a total of 13 on fly between them, as well as numerous yellowfin tuna in the 20lb. range.
Lisa Spooner and Monty Lewis came down from Tallahassee Florida in search of Lisa´s first sailfish. They had no problem finding one on her first day with Captain Condelo on the Miss Australia. The sailfish have been in close chasing large schools of sardines which have already started to show up in big numbers this year. Lisa and Monty ended the week with 31 sailfish released along with a few dorado and tuna.
On the Miss Costa Rica this week were Agustin Macias, Marco Camacho, Juan Hernaiz, and Alonso Aspe Franco from Mexico. They started off the week in great fashion releasing a large black the first day. They found some pods of sailfish as well and released 15.
Richard McGoldrick, Mark Mowatt and George Denney fished with Captain Jose on the Miss Canada and had a great week releasing 28 sailfish as well as Mark´s first Black Marlin. They also enjoyed the large schools of yellowfin tuna that are here right now. It was not a problem for these guys to catch enough for dinner at the lodge.
John and June Tanguy and Michael and Suzanne Voisin fished on the Miss Island Star and Miss Scandia, and all had fun releasing sails. They ended the week with a total of 25 and got in on some tuna action as well.
Leonard Kouba had a fantastic week releasing 30 sails, and with the help of Kerwin Steffans one day was able to release his first sail on fly. Great job!!
Lon and Karen Barome fished with Captain Armando and took advantage of the excellent tuna bite. They landed close to 40 tuna, and had a good time with the sailfish as well.
Shane and Michael Robertson joined Gus Gillespie on the Miss Island Star with Captain Gavilan. Shane had a great week catching his first ever sail, and father Michael and friend Gus joined in on the action as well.
Totals for the week were 2 Black Marlin released, 171 sails and many tuna and dorado.
Tight lines,
Whit
