Hennie & Ursula Marais manage to keep you in fish stories. |
March 31 - April 7
One can only describe it as a dream come true for young 13-year-old Ferris Shaheen. He returned to Tropic Star Lodge with his father Gregory, to catch his first Black Marlin. Not only did he accomplish this, fighting a feisty fish for his first Black Marlin but then went on to catch 2 more Black Marlin. One of 350lbs and an absolute beauty of 600lbs. Dad in the meantime was his official photographer. Ferris also caught two huge Snappers and a Roosterfish.
Mario and Pablo Quintana were joined by friend Fernando Martinez. The 3 of them having a blast aboard the Alaska with Pablo catching his first Blue Marlin- a good fish of 200lbs.
Mario also was in on the action the next day with a lovely Black Marlin of 300lbs. They spent some time fishing inshore and did battle with snapper and wahoo that are around at the moment.
The quartet of Richard Poore, Les Mangle, Wayne Sonday and Steven LaRosa had a funfilled week with Yellowfin tuna, Blue and Black Marlin.
Wayne caught his first Blue Marlin while Les reeled in his first Black Marlin. They also caught up to 12
Yellowfin tuna in a day with the odd Amberjack just to round off the catch.
While they only spent 3 short days with us the group of Randy Willis, Bill Griffin, Tripper Showell, Myron Szczukowski, Juan Arosemena and John Bruce saw a lot of action. Bill Griffin caught a beautiful fish of 350lbs for his first Black Marlin. Randy Willis matched this with his first Black Marlin also of 350lbs, while Tripper Showell caught a lovely Pacific Sailfish.
The boys also climbed into the Yellowfin tuna, delicious sushi right there on the boat.
David Clarke caught his first Blue Marlin while Chris Roberts and Boomer Jousma also caught their Black Marlin.
Alex Hatfield had his hands full fishing on the England with a Beauty of a Roosterfish of 50lbs, while over on the Island Star Steven Dunbar and Scott Gilbertson were having fun with Yellowfin tuna, Roosterfish and Amberjack.
You’ve heard of fisherman’s tales- here is a true one. While trolling along the shore, George Byrum and Byron Stermon heard a commotion from the bridge. The captain was shouting at the mate to get the gaff. What they saw was a large grouper on the surface and the captain wanted to try and gaff it. The boat edged up to the fish and the mate Alexis, tried to gaff the fish. With this it went down. So they carried on trolling and on their return the captain goes mad again as the fish is back on the surface.
This time they edge up to it and again it dives but only to re-emerge. So this time they close up slower and Alexis gets the gaff into the fish, but now the fish starts to struggle and Byron has to help out with the flying gaff or Alexis is going over the side. They get a second gaff into the fish and get it into the boat with a lot of effort only to realize the fish is a lot bigger than they thought. On returning to the lodge the Grouper weighs in at a mighty 141lbs with Alexis himself weighing in at 145lbs! Now we realize why he nearly went in with the fish. Believe it or not- but we did enjoy this fish for dinner.
Catch for the week:
Black Marlin 9
Blue Marlin 3
Pacific Sailfish 1
Yellowfin Tuna 51
Dorado 1
Amberjack 2
Roosterfish 6
Snapper 6
Grouper 1
Wahoo 1
