Hennie & Ursula Marais manage to keep you in fish stories. |
May 13 - May 19
The Sailfish bite is just getting hotter and hotter from week to week with boats releasing up to 35 fish a day.
Long time fishing friends of Hennie and Ursula, Paulo Ramalho, Heloisio Lopes, Ronaldo DaSilva, Robero Carvalho and Jose Brito, joined us for a week of fishing that they thought could not be better than their marlin fishing trip they had with Hennie a few years back. Paulo and Jose were in absolute ecstasy with the bite going on around them, releasing 39 Pacific Sailfish in half a day’s fishing on Wednesday. Ronaldo on the other hand released his first Pacific Sailfish as well as catching his first Roosterfish and Cubera Snapper. Paulo and Jose finished the week with the astonishing total of 112 Sailfish! While the others had spent more time fishing inshore they still ended with a respectable total of 44 making a grand total of 156 Pacific Sailfish released for the week for this group.
Billy Wagner once again joined us with his regular fishing compadres, Nathan Gulley, Carson Inscho, Hugh Liles, Bill Kass and first timers, Ed and Peggy Galli. Right from the outset there was a healthy competition between their boats, England and Australia. Billy, Ed and Peggy fished on the England while the rest fished on the Australia. Peggy on her first day out released her first Pacific Sailfish and two days later caught an absolute monster Roosterfish of 70lb’s. With the Sailfish action so hot they had to learn how to untangle lines with fish on the end as there were numerous multiple hook ups. While on the Australia the action was just as hot and furious. With releases of 25-35 a day their totals for the week were Australia 87 and England 102 for a grand total of 189.
Bill Stapleton together with family and friends, Jered Stapleton, Gary Stapleton, Clint Stapleton, Scott McArthur, Dennis Whittington, Gary Putnam, John Putnam, Ken Crumbley and Richard Selzer, got to experience some out of this world fishing during their stay here. They were split up on 3 different boats. The Puerto Rico was the most successful for the first day with an amazing total of 23 Sailfish releases amongst three anglers. They continued their winning formula and finished the week with a total of 52 Sailfish releases for the week. They were followed closely by the boys on Costa Rica with 35 releases and then Alaska with 21. Scott McArthur, Clint Stapleton, Dennis Whittington and Gary Putnam all catching and releasing their first Pacific Sailfish. They did however take time off to look for some Roosterfish and Gary caught a lovely 20lb Snapper on the Alaska. Meanwhile on the Costa Rica they had found the Roosterfish and caught 8 in-between catching Sailfish over 2 days. While on the Alaska they might not have caught as many Sails but they made up with 7 Roosterfish, 4 Snapper, a large Dorado and some Tuna.
After 4 days of spectacular fishing and a total of 108 Sails they left tired but totally satisfied.
Eugene and Vitalina Kelly could not have had more fun fishing with Captain Maso aboard the Miss Spain. They released 27 Sailfish while fishing with conventional tackle and fly fishing. They took 1 day looking for Roosters and were rewarded with four large Roosterfish of about 40lb’s each.
Ben Trevor and Bill Carroll were here to test out their fly fishing ability and see if they could take a Sailfish on fly. With a little patience they accomplished what they set out to do with both of them releasing their first Pacific Sailfish. Ben caught a monster 70lb Roosterfish and Bill a whopping 40lb Snapper while fishing inshore on conventional tackle. Their total for the week, an impressive 18.
Joe Turano and Ernie Cockrell were joined by Ernie’s sons, Ernie jr and David.
All of them are avid fly fisherman and were in for some of the best action when it comes to catching Sailfish. Ernie jr and David both catching their first Pacific Sailfish on fly and David’s first Pacific Sailfish. They had a blast and ended their short week with a total of 34 Sails all caught on fly.
Catch for the week:
Sailfish 592
Tuna 9
Dorado 4
Amberjack 2
Rooster Fish 23
Snapper 3
Grouper 3
