May 19 - May 26
This week the Roosters were crowing just as much as the Sails.
Steve Mote once again organized his annual fishing tournament with 14 of his fishing friends. With the Sailfish bite still hot they were in for a great 3 ½ days of fishing. They mixed the anglers up so that no one fished on the same boat or with the same people, well, that was how it was supposed to work. Saturday afternoon’s fishing could not have started the week off better with some of the boats releasing up to 17 Sails. With so much action Ed Menefee, Joe Potter, Jason Earnest, Spence Bowling, Robert Menefee, Dennis Fleming, Thom Earnest, Joe Dodson and Chris Irwin all released their first Pacific Sailfish in their first hour of fishing! At the end of the day Chris Irwin’s points took the top angler for the day.
With new fishing groups, the boy’s once again went out in pursuit of Sailfish on Sunday. In amongst the Sails there were also a few Yellowfin Tuna caught and at the end of the day Scott and Eric were tied for first place.
Monday they decided to mix it up a bit with some of the boats going looking for Roosterfish and Snapper. Chris and Tom each got to catch Monster Roosterfish of 70lbs while Steve tussled with a 50lb Snapper. Joe Potter took first prize.
With the points being very close there was everything to fish for on the last day. Once again the catch was mixed between Sails and Roosters with an amazing 9 Roosters on Tropic Star of which one was 70lbs. At the end of their fishing they amassed a total of 143 Sailfish and 30 Roosterfish and Barry Aron and Kenny Clark boating first place for the last day.
Tom Earnest having been consistent over the whole time ended up in the First place overall followed closely by Joe Potter. Well done! We look forward to next year.
Having caught Striped marlin in the Bahama’s, Paul and Tracey Bent came here to catch their first Pacific Sailfish. Not only did they release their first Pacific Sailfish but Paul added another Striped Marlin to his list of catches. Tracey caught a beautiful Roosterfish of 35lb’s and a Dorado of 40lb’s. They rounded off their catch with a few Yellowfin Tuna.
We thoroughly enjoyed the two brothers from Great Britain, Ian and Simon Bailey returning to Tropic Star Lodge. Having fished here with conventional tackle they decided to try some of the great light and fly tackle they had brought with them. They released a number of sails on fly and then went back to conventional tackle for Simon to catch and release his first Striped Marlin. There was also a number of Rooster’s in the 25-40lb range and Simon’s beautiful 40lb Dorado.
John Martinez, Brad Richards and Nick Tarnasky came for a short 2 day break and some great fishing. Brad and Nick both released their first Pacific Sailfish on their first outing. Brad also caught a Rooster, Pompano, Yellow fin tuna and a Dorado on the same day, excellent mix for the day. Things were just as hot the next day and they got to add a lovely Striped Marlin to their catch list and 5 more Sailfish.
Travis Russell brought his wife, Pam and daughter Megan together with friends Blake and Jennifer Cathey and Jason and his wife Shelby Cadwallader.
Jason was in his element when he released his first Pacific Sailfish and could not describe his joy when he caught his first Blue Marlin except that he would be back for more. While getting in on the Sailfish action they also mixed it up with some other fishing. Pam with a 50lb Rooster and Megan matching her with a beautiful Snapper of 45lbs.
Catch for the week:
Blue Marlin 1
Striped Marlin 3
Pacific Sailfish 236
Yellowfin Tuna 30
Dolphin 20
Amberjack 10
Rooster fish 61
Snapper 7
Grouper 1
