May 27 - June 3
This week was a fantastic week for the guests. Most
people got to catch and release their first Pacific
Sail and their first Roosterfish. Lots of anglers
caught their first Dorado and their first Tuna as
well. Lots of firsts!
There is a lot of trash still out there from the heavy
rains. The logs and debris are holding bait and other
fish like Dorado and Tripletail. There was a line out
12 miles with clean green on one side and gorgeous
blue water on the other side of the line.
The sails were multiplying. First one, then two. The
reports were three Sails at one time, four at once. I
heard a report of four Sails hooked up and a fifth
hungry Sail coming to the boat and taking the teaser
that was barely hanging in the water. They said the
fish was so aggressive that it broke the line and took
off with the teaser.
The Wagner crew said they could have caught 7 Sails at
one time if they had more anglers. These guys were a
group of 3. Everyone had Sails on, the Captain on
the bridge, the mate and the 3 anglers were all
dancing together. They said it was a blast.
The Tuna were smaller fish, bait size and bigger, but
the Dorado were large. Several were well into the
40lb range.
Here are the numbers for the week:
Black Marlin 1
Striped Marlin 1
Sails 218
Tuna 81
Dorado 46
Roosters 139
Snapper 10
Amberjack 5
The hot topic for this week was Dr. John Waldrop's
last morning of fishing. He went out to fish for
Roosterfish with limited time. His flight was
scheduled to pick him up around 1 PM. He came back
smiling because he experienced greatness. This took
place aboard Miss Tropic Star with Captain Alberto.
In three hours of fishing he set a new lodge record.
Dr. Waldrop released 38 Roosterfish in 3 hours of
fishing. Amazing! He said he did not have time to
drink refreshment or eat a snack. "It was incredible."
That record will be tough to beat in a day.
Miss Darien tagged a nice Black Marlin along with 20
Sails and a bunch of inshore species.
Rachel Olander took a break from Law School to release
her first Striped Marlin, her first Pacific Sail and
her first Roosterfish. The Rooster was estimated to
weigh 65-Pounds. Doug Olander released his first
Pacific Sail. These two were fishing with Captain
Libardo aboard the Miss Costa Rica.
Tracy Ward caught his first Dorado and his first
Pacific Sail. Bradley Nelson caught his first Rooster,
his first Dorado and his first Pacific Sail.
Jeff Ward caught a nice Rooster and his first Pacific
Sail.
John Robertson and his son John Jr. caught their first
Pacific Sails and their first Roosterfish. John Jr
managed to catch his first Dorado as well. Folks were
excited for the fried Dorado appetizers.
Mark Elam had a hat trick. He caught his first Sail,
first Rooster and his first Dorado.
Leonard Robinson went a step further. He caught his
first Sail, his first Dorado, his first Amberjack and
his first Roosterfish.
Hugh Liles got the Naysayer Award.
Tom Gulley caught his first Rooster and his first
Cubera.
Master Zachary Atchley wrestled with a 45lb Dorado
and caught it! He also released his first Pacific
Sailfish and continued to release many more throughout
the week. This little man was on fire. He had a lot of
fun. Zachary also managed to bring in his first Yellow
fin tuna. The tuna was estimated to weigh 20lbs. I
forgot to mention that Zachary is 6 years old. What a
Stud!
William Wagner released his first Pacific Sail and his
first Roosterfish.
Bill Kass released his first Pacific Sail and his
first Roosterfish; they said it was a good one,
roughly 60lbs.
Robert Korose caught his first Roosterfish; it was
caught on fly gear. He released several sails on fly
throughout the week along side Dr. Vic Tadesco.
Eric Dutcyvich came down with friends Kenneth Johnson
and Alec Clark. They came all the way from Vancouver.
They fished Sails and roosterfish during the day but
at night they stayed up in the palace. These guys had
a blast. The Sails wrecked their salmon tackle, but
they managed to release those fish regardless.
Last but not least, David Jones and David Jones Jr.
came south with Joshua Gentry and Michael Quinlan.
These guys were a lot of fun. David Jones caught a
nice 50lb Cubera Snapper. They each caught their
first Pacific Sailfish, first Roosterfish and their
first Dorado. These guys had a great time with Captain
Gavilan onboard Miss Island Star. These guys get an
honorable mention. They caught 17 Roosterfish in a
short period of time and then went offshore to look
for a big hungry Marlin.
Private Boat Action:
A beautiful private boat just pulled in the other day.
Old Reliable, she is a custom Carolina boat. The crew
released a 225lb Black Marlin on fly gear yesterday.
Sorry Dear was here most of the week as well. These
guys went a little further than normal looking for
fish. They managed to find a few Sails and some
Striped Marlin action. They got into a school of Tuna
and released a big Blue Marlin the other day as well.
That is the fish report from the Darien Gap.
