Incredible sailfish bite! Yesterday I saw over
300 sailfish feeding in less than 3 hours of fishing.
They are right outside the bay and they are eating
everything. This week's tally was 384 sails released.
One group found the bite so hot, they could not live
with themselves if they got on the plane. So, they are
still with us.
There were a few nice roosterfish caught, some of them
were close to 50lbs. 158 snapper were caught. Most
of these were smaller snapper. Many were released, and
many were consumed. 16 amberjack mixed things up as
did 4 wahoo. 7 grouper made great dishes. There were
also 30 football tuna brought back for sushi. Add
8 dorado - you get the picture...
The sails are feeding on sardines right at the mouth
of the bay. Fuel consumption is way down and the flags
are way up. Several sails fell for the fly. Most were
caught on belly strips or on ballyhoo. A few sails ate
artificial lures when the bait was difficult to
locate.
One boat had a sail land perfectly between the chair
and the fish box. The mate aboard was little Pedro,
who jumped on the fish and threw it overboard. Both of
them were a little surprised. Everyone agreed that was
a caught fish.
There is so much bait that the pelicans are gorging
themselves. They splash down and their bills are so
full of bait that they had to sit and choke down the
whole lot. You know the saying about pelicans and
their bills. Well it is true. There were a thousand
birds everywhere throwing up sardines. It was a
pelican party. I did not know that pelicans were
bulimic. All of them. They all need counseling.
It was a great week here. Everyone was jazzed up.
Eleanor celebrated her birthday last night. To all of
her fans out there, she says, ¨Hello and happy
Mother's day! And NO, I am not telling you how old I
am.¨
Things have not changed too much around here. One
thing that has changed, we are starting to put the new
Tiagra 50A reels onboard some of the boats. These
reels are a new and improved version of the Tiagra
workhorse. These new reels have several new features;
the most noticeable are the improved handle and a
ratcheting drag lever. So far the feedback is
excellent. These reels are mostly used for the tuna
and the marlin.
We are working to find the perfect artificial
ballyhoo. I think we are close to having an artificial
belly bait. The wheels are turning anyway.
David Hatch and his sister Allison released their
first sails. 19-year-old Allison was one of the
most successful anglers all week. David Ourlicht said
he is defiantly coming back. He caught his first sail
as well. Bruce Forster and JT Sherman caught their
first sails. JT brought in a 40lb wahoo. Peter
McEnvoy and Paul Maloney wailed on the Sails and Peter
caught his first wahoo and a nice 25lb Broomtail
Grouper.
Ben Estes caught his first sail on conventional
tackle, and then he caught and released a sail on a
fly rod. Excellent.
Matt Adamo caught his first sail, Cubera and dorado.
Anthony D´Aleo caught a nice Cubera. These 2 were
looking for marlin but had a good time with the sails.
John Ferrante managed to release his first Pacific
Sail.
John Swaney boasted a 40lb roosterfish.
Thomas Lepsch released his first rooster as well as
his first sail.
If you need a sailfish fix, come and see us. In a few
weeks I am going to be writing about marlin and dorado
and tuna.
That is the skinny on what is happening here at Tropic
Star...
