Fishing Report

Our 2008 Season is already filling up fast. Don't get left at the dock! Call Bonnie in Orlando for availability- 800-682-3424.
Managers
Hennie & Ursula Marais manage to keep you in fish stories.
Nov 27 - Dec 1 2007
The beginning of a new season is once again upon us. While some of us had the opportunity to take some time off, our maintenance and construction team, headed by Carlos Alvarez, had a tough time doing repairs and constructing our new roofed area at the pool. With about 100 inches of rain having fallen over this period, one could understand their hardships trying to work in those conditions. Well done on your achievements and we are sure that our guests coming in the new season will appreciate all the work done by you.

We also welcome Ben and Kerry Phelps who have taken over as our manager’s from Hennie and Ursula and wish them all the best for the future. Lorena has left us for a exciting new position in Sweden, all the best in your new venture.

Now to the action, and aplenty there was.

Fishing Report:

The VIIth Tropic Star Lodge tournament kicked off the season with 31 boats fishing over 3 days for a multitude of prizes, the ultimate being a Nissan Pathfinder for the angler who released a marlin on the 3 days of fishing.

With some of the anglers getting in a bit of practice before the tournament, there was a lot of action with marlin and sailfish being released. Nick Wong released his first Pacific Sailfish and first Blue Marlin, beauty of 500lbs. Dave Durno also released his first Blue Marlin. Tom Courteau caught a huge Black Marlin of about 600lbs for his first while Tom Kilburn spent 4 hours battling a Black Marlin. Tim Mc Alpin caught his first Pacific Sailfish.

Day 1
Sailfish were in abundance for some of the teams giving them a good start to the tournament. Team “Trini to the Bone” consisting of Ray Chang, Pete and Nick Wong took full advantage and caught 9 Sailfish followed closely by by team “3 Perros Afortunados” with 7 Sailfish. John Sheridan caught a Blue Marlin and a Sailfish to help his team into 3rd place for the day. There was also a Blue Marlin for Ken McAlpin of Team “Tres Roosters”.

The private boat division was led by El Brinco with 2 marlin and 1 sailfish. Private boat anglers, Gary Carter, Albert Btesh, Francisco Salerno and Enrique Lewis also getting Blue Marlin and putting them in line to win the Nissan Pathfinder. Joining them was Guillermo Henne with a striped Marlin.

Day 2
As is customary, all the boats lined up for the Bimini Start, an amazing sight to see all 31 boats lined up waiting to get out to the fish which were around 20 miles out.

Once out there it was the turn of team “Pina Colada” to outshine all the rest. John Sheridan, John Chisholm and Don Mc Kinnon got stuck in to the sailfish and managed to release 12 and a Blue Marlin giving them 1500 points for the day. “Trini to the Bone” followed them into second spot for the day with 700 points. Backatawn led the second day for the private boats amasing a whopping 1000 points for the day.

Francisco Salerno on the Mandiales caught a monster Dorado of 53.5lbs to win him the prize for the biggest Dorado of the tournament.

Taylor Housser came in with a bus of a Yellowfin tuna that weighed in at 186.1lbs to give him first place for Yellow fin tuna.

Day 3
With “Pina Colada” having built up a nice lead that was going to be hard to catch, second and third place was still wide open. Last year’s winner’s, team “Ola Azul” put in a late charge and had a amazing catch of 2 Blue Marlin and 7 sailfish to give them 1300 points and top place for the day. Unfortunately not having had much luck on the first 2 days, it was not enough to make it into the top 3. “ Pina Envy” also had a great last day and with their 900 points, they managed to get into tied 2nd place with “Trini to the Bone”, who had been consistent throughout the tournament.

Over on the private boats it was Silver-Rod-O who took first place for the day, unfortunately not enough to catch up to El Brinco who had done well with the marlin and sailfish.

A total of 35 Marlin and 226 Sailfish were released during the 3 days.

Results:

Bertram Division:
Top boat, a well deserved win to Tropic Star and Captain Alberto.

Top Team went to “Pina Colada” with 2500 points, second place being tied by “Pinas Envy” and “Trini to the Bone” with 2000 Points.

Top Angler being Pete Wong of “Trini to the Bone” with 1100 points

Private Boat Division:
Top boat went to El Brinco with 1600 points followed by Backatawn with 1400 points and in 3rd place Warrior Sportfishing.

Top Angler was Bernard Shreiber with 1200 points

Congratulations to all of the angler’s that took part in another successful tournament. Thank you to all of those who were involved in the running of the tournament. We look forward to seeing you all again next year.

Dock Master
