Jan 19 - Jan 26
This week we welcomed a lot of old friends who have been coming to the lodge for nearly as many years as it has been in existence.
Martin and Elaine Hirsch were once again joined by Craig Metzger and his friend David Perrera. Martin is an avid Black Marlin angler and has just recently returned from a fishing trip to Australia. This week though, his highlight could only have been the monster Yellow fin tuna which had him in the chair for 8 hours. They eventually landed the fish at 6pm and when it was hung on the scale it weighed and amazing 284lbs. David on the other hand did what we all dream of. On Sunday he caught his first Black Marlin and followed it up on Tuesday with a GRAND SLAM in one day.
When Matt Groneck married Gary and Maureen Sandor’s daughter Jill, he didn’t realize how lucky he was. She loves fishing just as much as her mom and dad and so Matt and Jill get to join them on their fishing trips. Matt and Jill started off with a bang; Jill caught her first Pacific Sailfish and first Black Marlin while Matt caught his first Pacific Sailfish on the first day. With the ladies fishing alternate day’s Matt carried on his quest and caught his first Black Marlin and first Blue Marlin to complete his GRAND SLAM for the week. Gary in the meantime caught a Black Marlin and Maureen a 350lb Black Marlin.
Dan Erb likes to bring a new friend to catch Marlin each year. This time it was no exception, Doug Cox caught his first Pacific Sailfish and then 2 days later his first Black Marlin. They rounded off their week with plenty of Sailfish action.
Thomas Brownridge and Carolyn Hewitt were once again fishing with their favorite captain, Candelo. There week started off with a flurry of action, both Thom and Carolyn caught a Black Marlin and 7 Sailfish on the Sunday. Carolyn followed this with another Black of 500lbs while Thom landed a large Yellow fin tuna of 113lbs. They added one more Black Marlin to bring their total for the week to 4.
Carol Schorr once again teamed up with Captain Dagoberto for a week of some amazing action for one person. On Monday she released 1 Black Marlin and 8 Sailfish, then caught another 2 Black Marlin and 1 Sailfish the following day. Carol then rounded off her week with 1 more Black Marlin and 3 more Sailfish.
George Couch and Doug Ooms brought along some Bob Schneider lures to test here. They enjoyed a lot of action and raised a lot of fish. They ended the week with a staggering total of 19 Sailfish. George was kind enough to leave me some lures which I will be putting to good use and reporting back on their success here.
Ed McCarthy was joined by his son, Martin for the first half of the week and Kim Evans for the last half. Ed caught a Black Marlin while Martin enjoyed some of the Sailfish action. Kim was hot out of the starting blocks and caught his first Striped Marlin. He caught a Black Marlin of 350lbs and another Striped Marlin to round off his three days of fishing.
Eileen Friedman has the perfect arrangement with her husband Edward. She gets to catch all the fish and he takes all the photos. She was more than happy at the end of her week after she caught 9 Sailfish in one day and then 2 Black Marlin and a further 12 Sailfish during the course of the week.
Elizabeth Wallschlager brought her new husband, Ron to see what she had enjoyed on previous visits to Tropic Star. Not only did Elizabeth catch her first Black Marlin, but they caught numerous Sailfish and had some amazing fun fishing inshore with small tuna and Jack’s.
Gilbert Lampens and Andre Huys had lots of Sailfish action but had to wait until their last day before Gilbert managed to get the hook to stay in a Blue Marlin after a number of attempts earlier in the week.
Some might say it is just a fishing story, but Joseph and Drynda Crookshank will tell you otherwise. After hooking in to a Blue Marlin and fighting it for about 1 hour, Joseph noticed another line wrapped around his. They pulled on it and found it was also attached to the fish. So they joined it onto one of the other rods, ala Guy Harvey, and then brought the fish to the boat. Not only did Joseph release his Blue Marlin, but he gained a lure which was still in the marlin’s mouth, which they removed. What a way to finish your week.
