Jan 26 - Feb 2

Simon Turner and his fishing buddy from Mexico, Jimmy Allen, together with Simon’s son in law from Australia came looking for some good marlin action. Simon and Jimmy caught their first marlin on the same day. Simon catching a Blue Marlin and Jimmy a Black Marlin of 300lbs. Sean joined in on the fun with a Blue Marlin. Sean caught another Blue Marlin on Thursday when Simon went fishing on the panga and had a great time catching small Yellow fin tuna and Spanish mackerel. Jimmy took the day off and hiked to the beach.

Long time friends Ed Rhett, Jeffrey Colbath, TJ Parsell and Ben Rhett had a week they will not easily forget. There was excitement all around, TJ the first one in the action with his first Black Marlin. Ed was next with his first Black Marlin and Ben then caught his first Blue Marlin, a 450lb beauty.

Sharing two boats were Alec Clark, Chris Dutcyvich, Eric Dutcyvich, Ken Johnson, Paul Uppal and Rob Liden. Chris Dutcyvich was the man with all the luck this week; he caught his first Black Marlin which he followed up on the Thursday with a fish of a lifetime, a Blue Marlin of about 800lbs. Meanwhile Rob Liden caught his first Blue Marlin and Ken Johnson his first Striped Marlin.

Tropic Star has become a favorite place to come fishing for Rob Talt, so this time he brought his brother Michael and friends Frank Ritacco, Alex Primiano, Anthony Lalli and Robert Howard. Rob and Anthony are both and searching for Black Marlin and ended up catching one on Tuesday, but unfortunately it took both their baits and they had to share it. Anthony however caught a Blue Marlin. Alex was off to a good start with Sailfish and got one of over 100lbs before he caught his first Blue Marlin on Thursday. Frank however had a monster Dorado of about 40lbs and also a Blue Marlin of 400lb’s. Rob got right down to the wire and caught his first Black Marlin in the dying moments, a fish of 400lbs.

Sam and Rose Pancotto brought their two sons Geeno and Sam Jr. with this time. They fished with their favorite Captain, Candelo, and you can see why. There was Marlin for them from the start. Sam Jr started the ball rolling with a Black Marlin of 450lbs, which they inserted a satellite tag into as part of a scientific research program we are assisting the Marine Conservation Science Institute in California with. Next up was Geeno with a Blue Marlin while dad watched on proudly. On Wednesday Sam and Sam Jr were back in the chair, Sam caught a Blue Marlin of 300lbs and Jr a Black of 350lbs which also had a satellite tag inserted. Geeno then caught a monster Blue of around 600lbs to add to his tally.

Frank and Deborah Busher got the week they have been waiting for, it all started with 3 Marlin on the first day. Frank caught 2, a Black and a Blue Marlin which weighed 453lbs, while Deborah got a Blue. On Wednesday they were into the Black Marlin again with another 2 monsters and a Pacific Sailfish. Thursday brought Frank another Blue Marlin of 553lbs. Frank completed the week with another Black Marlin of 400lbs to bring their tally to 7 Marlin.

Roy Van Lanen was having the time of his life on the Scandia with Captain Gustavo. He started the week of with 2 Black Marlin and a Pacific Sailfish. Things just got better from there with another Black and a Sailfish the next day. Then he added another Black Marlin and a Blue Marlin to his tally on Thursday. He finished the week off with a monster of 600lbs to put his new record at 6 Marlin for the week.

Gordy Fawcett and Bob Newcomb were once again on their quest for Marlin on the fly rod, while their wives Beth and Pam, joined them on alternate days. Unfortunately the marlin preferred the diet of live bonito to artificial baits and this led them to capitulate and go back to conventional tackle, not before Gordy had caught a Sailfish and Beth her first Dorado on a fly rod. Bob caught a Blue Marlin of 550lbs on Thursday and watched another monster race off into the distance never to be seen again. He caught another Blue on Friday to finish his week off in style.

Ralph and Catherine Martin were fishing with Gilberto on the South Africa and also helped us with the satellite tagging program when the crew inserted a tag into a Black Marlin of about 350lbs a very satisfied Catherine had caught.

Our old friend Jerry Winkler will be filling in for me for the next week as I go out on a few days leave. Look forward to seeing you all on my return.
