2019 Fishing Season Highlights

Healthy grouper caught in the waters off Tropic Star Lodge in Piñas Bay

The water temperatures started off on the cooler side at the start of the week and by the end of the second day it was right back up to 84 degrees. We had southerly winds most days which helped the sea conditions bringing in clean warm water and keeping the swell down. The southerly winds also brought in unseasonal cloud cover.

Couple has a double catch of tunaThe Marlin bite was tough over the last week with only a few Black Marlin released by the fleet. A few boats went further offshore for Dorado and the odd Blue Marlin at about 16 Miles out. In the begging of the week boats were loading up on Yellowfin Tuna around 20 lb to 60 lb on poppers and cedar plugs. As the week went on the Yellowfin were replaced by shoals of Dorado as the seas warmed up. Inshore, anglers caught everything from Grouper to Roosterfish. Some gorgeous Cubera Snapper were released and the numbers of Jacks and Mackerel caught was just insane in between the more sought after species.

Thomas and Katherine Dougherty join us each year with good friends, Sam and Jennifer Galloway. The two couples love fishing and are always having a great time with lots of laughs. They always fish with Capt. Walter and this year was no exception. Last year Tom Daugherty released his Grand Slam with Walter. This year, the fishing foursome did release a beauty of a Black Marlin and then countless Dorado and Yellowfin Tuna.

Edward Moore and Floyd Lewis arrived to the Lodge to target Black Marlin. The Gents fished on Australia with Capt. Candelo. The fishing was tough, however, the gentlemen released four Cubera Snapper with Ed’s first at 45 ll and Floyd’s at 40 lbs. They also caught loads of Yellowfin and Dorado but their highlight was Ed releasing his first Black of 250 lb and Floyd releasing his first Black of 550 lb. Congratulations on a job well done!

Steve Hinchcliffe and Jan Toncar celebrated Steve’s birthday during their visit with us at Tropic Star Lodge. The guys have enjoyed fishing for many years and they had Marlin at the top of their bucket list. They arrived to TSL to tick a few species off their list. The gents fished on one of our newly remodeled Bertram 31’s, Miss Scandia with Capt. Jose behind the wheel. Jan released his first Black Marlin of 300 lb and Steve released his first Black of 350 lb and his first Blue of 300 lb. The gentlemen also got to caught lots Yellowfin Tuna and Dorado to bring back to the Lodge for the Chef.

Each afternoon the pool was buzzing with fishing tales of giant fish released and more than a few of those that got away. The guests had lots of fun together and particularly sending anglers to walk the plank for their first Black Marlin.

Tight lines and fair seas.
