Fishing Highlights from the Tropic Star Lodge on Panama

The Black marlin have been providing anglers with adrenaline rushes and aerial acrobatics that just can’t be matched. Yellowfin Tuna have started to smash the surface in huge shoals with pods of Porpoise and birds diving into the bait balls in spectacular fashion.  Guests are witnessing Tropic Star’s legendary tuna feeding frenzies and are catching an abundance of hook-to-table Sashimi. The dorado are still around harassing baits along with the occasional sailfish offshore, and Inshore the bite is starting to turn on with Cubera snapper, Roosterfish and Grouper making their way to their usual little nooks and crannies.

Flags are flying indicating the days catchThe seasons have started to change in terms of the seas. We are having fairly constant Northerly wind and we are seeing the first signs of the cold water starting to make its way in. Far to the North and far out to sea we are starting to find colder water in the mid to high seventies that is slightly off colour, but around the lodge for about 5-20 miles the temperature has kept at a perfect 82-85 degrees fahrenheit– which are perfect temps for the Billfish and Dorado. With the colder water starting to make its way in, we are seeing the first signs off juvenile sardines and Goggle eyes in the shallows. And offshore, the fully-grown sardines and hardtail are on the receiving end of the tuna frenzies which always start as the water begins to cool down. Great bait.

Our guests Clayton Williams, Kerry Latch, James Isbell (Hunter), and Greg Wellborn came to Tropic Star to get in on the Marlin action. Clayton and Hunter have been fishing with us before and it was wonderful seeing them again. All the gents had some fishing goals, last time we saw the duo it was during our annual roosterfish tournament in May last year. Clayton was here for his Black Marlin which he got to release, it was 407 lb according to him making it just 7 pounds bigger than Kerry’s who’s was 400 lb. and also his first. We had loads of fun with the guys and got to celebrate Hunters birthday with him. I also know you are all going to love the picture of the very rare Yeti fish being hung up in the pics to follow.

Mark and Sheryl Hattervig came to Piñas to land Mark his first Marlin all the way from Oregon. Mark has been fishing with us before during our inshore season and had a great time and now he was back with his wife to get his Marlin. Neptune really made him work for his first Marlin but when he got it, it was an incredible 350lb. Black that put on an incredible display and I got to be there personally to capture the fish on Camera and wow did she perform. We can’t wait to see the fun loving couple again in the near future.

Past guests Gus and Anthony Osterkamp were down again for some fun action with Gus’s friends Raymond Takeda and Robert Watts. Last time Gus was down with his grandson, they got stuck into some great tuna and a big Black Marlin, this time things where not too different. The group was always quick with a smile and tales of adventures that most can only dream of. The knowledge and passion for the outdoors was intoxicating and we loved being able to share a drink and listen to fishing stories from other adventures around the world. This trip “Mr. Ray” as we loved to call him and Robert did the Tropic Star plank walk. They also got to tackle some great Yellowfin tuna and more than their fair share of Dorado.

Yes, the seasons are starting to change… but man did we have fun this week. Fishing ranged from chasing giant Black Marlin, to having arms stretched after taking on Yellowfin tuna with poppers. The Inshore was where guests some had the best of luck.  The evenings were eventful when the stories and camaraderie made you feel like you had gone back in time to a better era when life was carefree. It was fantastic to be able to enjoy these moments with such incredible guests.

It’s going to be interesting to see what Neptune has in offer for us next week, but he always does provide. So, from me and the team– we hope to see you soon.

Tight lines and Fair seas,
Richard White
